Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

Usually if you are suppose to reset both the SMC along with the PRAM, they go hand in hand.

No more kernel panics for me since doing the reset.

    MacGallant,

I did a SMC and PRAM reset, but few days later, kernel panics came back.

I'm now at 10.10.2 (reinstalled from scratch) with all same apps that I had in 10.10.3 - rock solid, like Larsen2k4.

    I definitely agree with him.
It is a matter of time more and more people find this discussion and to post their problems.

After all these weeks with almost daily crashes, I'm even willing to give the current 10.10.4 beta 2 a try - can only get better ... But I'm unable to log in to the beta program site, because it's got some redirection problems at the moment.

Exact same issue here. Flickering and random kernel panics since 10.10.3 update. I am so happy I found this thread, since I was already thinking my hardware was broken.

@MrCamaleo: Thank you very much for the Google survey!

    Some more details:

    • MBP mid 2012 15'', non-retina first 16GB RAM, now back to 8GB stock because on module appeared to be faulty
    • 750GB Samsung 840 evo SSD.
    • LittleSnitch. This problem seems to appear more often for LS users: See also discussion on the LS forum.
    • Was using DisplayLink drivers before (USB graphics) - uninstalling those seems to have helped a little

I have the feeling this mostly happens to tinkers using different RAM, SSDs, and kernel extensions...

PRAM and SMC resets as well as running Onyx (delete Kernel Caches, etc.) seems to help for a while. But the random crashes and the flickering always come back. AppleCare told me they knew nothing about this issue. Does anyone have a case number we could refer to?

Struggling with the flickering yesterday night I decided to reinstall OS X from scratch so that I can add just the apps needed for my work – in the hope to find out if there is some conflicting software (like Little Snitch).

I'm actually still completing the installation and the flickering did not appeared until 5 minutes ago.

The last installed software was MySQL 5.6.24 and, right after I started the server I got the flickering back.

Now I stopped the MySQL server and moved a window on the flickering, the flickering is gone – at least for the moment.

Question for all the users with the flickering:

do you have MySQL installed on your system?

Same here: No MySQL running. LS turned out to be innocent for me as well - OS X panics and flickers whether LS is installed or not.

Today I've had no crash - only difference: I've used Firefox all day instead of Safari. I'll keep my eye on this.

    Safari could be the culprit.

I have seen quite a few times lately a popup telling that Safari webcontent crashed.

Today Safari was updated to 8.0.6.

Two good signs that Safari had a problem....

True, there is an update. But two days ago I had a panic with the Security Update being already installed. So obviously this didn't help.

I only use Firefox and haven't opened Safari in months. I'd assume the error occurs rather when switching the GPU (e. g. when playing videos on YouTube).  This has been an issue with several macs and OS X versions in the past.

Now that I think of it, maybe I should try and disable GPU switching in the preferences for a while. This usually helped. Has anyone tried that already?

I have been crash-free for almost a week now...? Mild flickering here and there though.

Good to know. So I assume that I'll get the next crash/flickering even with Firefox soon. I'll report again once it happened.
