Q: 1000s of photos moved into Recently Deleted - no idea why

Hello - I just checked my recently deleted folder and found that at a couple of times shortly after switching to iCloud Photos, thousands of my photos have been deleted.  I have no idea how this has happened - certainly nothing I've done deliberately. They span various years, albums and events and don't appear to have any commonality - just that a percentage of my library has been deleted more or less at random.  I switched to iCloud photos to make data loss less likely and its frankly distressing that I only just caught some of these in the recently deleted folder before they were shredded.  Is this a known issue for others?

Could they have been in the iPhoto Trash bin when the library was converted to Photos?  Could the Trash Bin not have been emptied?

That's good theory - is there a way to check now that iPhoto is history?  I'd be surprised if this were the case though as they were holiday and wedding photos I really wouldn't have trashed - i don't think.  Then again user error knows no bounds.

Not if the iPhoto library is gone - that is why it is strongly recommended that you do not trash it until you are really sure you are done with it - trashing it does not save much space at all

If you had not trashed the iPhoto library  then you could launch iPhoto and see what was there and even convert again
