Q: How do I delete a free book from my iPad?

I downloaded a free self help book to my iPad but it was not very useful and I now want to delete it. After deleting the book  still shows with a download icon but for personal reasons I do not want the cover to show at all. When I open iTunes on my PC the book does not show so I am unable to delete it there. How do I get rid of this book?

iPad Air, iOS 8.1.3

You can't permanently delete it from your account's purchase history (no item can be deleted from it), if you don't want it to show in the cloud then you can either hide all iCloud books in the iBooks app by tapping on the collection name at the top middle of the iBooks bookshelf and turning 'hide iCloud books' 'on' at the bottom of the list of collections ; or you can hide just that book via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes so that it doesn't show in the cloud : Hide and unhide purchases in the iTunes Store - Apple Support.

Thanks King-Penguin.  Your suggestion of hiding all iCloud books worked but leaves me wondering what I would do if I purchase iCloud books in the future that I want to show.

This free book does not show on the Purchased link in the iTunes store which is why I cannot delete it that way but this would be my preferred solution.

Where exactly are your looking for the book in Purchased ? You can only hide books via the Purchased section under Quick Links on the store homepage on your computer's iTunes (iBooks app on a Mac), not the iTunes store app on your iPad.

If it's not showing in the Books section of the Purchased area on your computer then check to see if it's already hidden : log into your account via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes and select the 'hidden purchases' section (the section will only show if you have hidden purchases). If it's already hidden then try logging out of your account on your iPad by tapping on your id at the bottom of the Featured tab in the iBooks app and then log back in and see if it still shows in the cloud on it.

I am looking at iTunes on my PC and logged on. This free book is not shown under Purchased, other books I paid for are.  Also 'hidden purchases' is not visible.

It is almost as if this free book does not exist apart from displaying the cover on my iPad. These things should come with with a health warning, 'If you download a free self help book you can never get rid of it.'

It shouldn't matter whether it was free to download or not, if it's still in the store then it should show for hiding. You've tried logging out and back into the account that 'bought' the book, on both your iPad and your computer's iTunes, and seeing if it then shows in the Purchased section for hiding ?

The free book was 'purchased' through iTunes. I have logged in and out of my iTunes account on my computer and now logged in on a different computer but it is still not showing in the purchased folder. I am unsure how to log in and out on my iPad as I am always logged in using my Apple ID.
