Q: Cannot create child Apple ID

I'm trying to create an Apple ID for a child under 13 using Settings -> iCloud -> Family and the link at the bottom which says "Create an Apple ID for a child."  I tap that, choose the birthdate, then agree to the EULA.  The next page says "A credit card is required" and to "Go to iTunes & App Store Settings and tap on your Apple ID to add a valid credit card to your account."  I already have a credit card on file and it is valid so I'm not sure where to go from here.  It's just stuck.

    so if I am understanding you correctly, you have to have a credit card when you set it up only? Then you can change it back. because there is no way I would leave a credit card as my payment option, that would be nuts!

    That was my experience. I switched to the credit card, created the child ID, then switched back. It took about a minute, and my purchases since then are hitting my debit card.

    IIt worked for us. We used a credit card to set up the account then switched back over to my debit card once it was all completed. Thanks to everyone who replied

    I don't have a credit card. Apple please notify when you have updated this. This is ridiculous.

    Whilst I understand that this is due to a section in the US Child Protection laws... not everyone lives in the US, and even more do not use credit cards, as they are responsible enough to not get into debt.

    So, for those of us NOT in the US, can we please get a clarification as to why:

    1. Apple is incentivising people having debts;
    2. Apple is restricting people with poor credit scores from exercising responsible parental controls, as they are not able to get a credit card;
    3. Apple is holding every non-US user to a blunt law that only applies in one of their customer countries.

    Apple is not here. This is a forum where your fellow users answer technical questions.

    Thanks, yes I have similar concerns but they are at scale in a school situation in Australia. I have written a detailed response at

    Re: Have child but no credit card

    Hopefully it gets addressed and simplified.
