With my computer and my WiFi and my internet connection and my house internet workload it took about 10 days for 7000 photos - yours (and everyone else) will be totally different due to totally different environments
I felt like it speeded things up to occasionally use, reboot the Mac and restart the process - but no way to actually prove that - try it and see what you think

I have a lot of photos (10,000+) that I'm trying to upload to iCloud. It is taking forever. As in weeks. Is this normal? Is there any tricks to helping it go faster?
Thanks.
Unless you have FIOS for home from Verizon - which has upload speeds same as download - and only offered in a few cities -- or can do the upload where you work - over a super fast business connection -- it will be slow.
You list yourself at Mavericks - but if you are at Yosemite using PHOTOS- here are some help pages to get you started. If you are using ICLOUD as a backup drive - Apple suggests you use time machine at home.
