Q: How do you go back to iPhotos after downgrading to Photos?

iPhotos was a much more feature developed app. The import of the iPhotos library ignored or trashed all of the specific photo metadata. Further the "new" app lacks most of the useful features of iPhoto.

iphoto (version 9.6.1 - see Why won't my iPhotos open? if you did not upgrade prior to going to OS X 10.10.3) still works fine -  launch it rom your applications folder

iPhotos "must be upgraded to the current version" to open. The link to the App Store states that iPhotos is no longer available. Trying to trash Photos says it can't be deleted or modified because it is required by OS X.  Luckily, I only downgraded to Photos on one of my computers. Unfortunately, it is the one I use most.

Frankly, I'm see little difference between Microsoft and Apple these days. Both are so driven by their own convenience that they fail to take their customers into account.

You need to read - no where are you told ti trash Photos - the instruction is to drag the old iPhoto application to the trash

then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Do you want advice, or simply to whine about Apple.

Start with the following support pages from Apple - the extra features in PHOTOS are there for the curious - along with being able to use IPHOTO and how the metadata was changed.

I would like advice on how to go back to a more useful product.

    • I spent years creating the metadata in iPhoto only to have Photos trash it. I have no intention of spending more of the time I have left in my life recreating it.
    • The editing features in Photos are much less robust than those in iPhotos.
    • Photos only allows one library, rather than allowing for special purpose libraries as did iPhotos.

To your false dichotomy of only getting to ask for advice or ask for advice: I worked for Apple for almost a decade before I retired. It was one of the most exciting phases of my career, but it did not deserve the evangelical religious zeal so many attach to it or its products. I have a very soft spot for the company in my heart. When I criticize it, it is because I hope someone in power will listen. The strength of Apple have always been its understanding of its customers and its product line. I hope the company can avoid the problems most encounter when they lose a visionary leader.

    Tacky.

You have been told exactly how to go back - but you are too busy whining to do it

and you are (of course) totally wrong in your statements - Photos is much more robust in editing that iPhoto and Photo can have multiple libraries just like iPhoto

    Have a nice day

Sorry I bothered to try this forum. The answer is, "It can't be done."  I should have known better.

Yes it can be done, but that is not what you want, you came here to spread FUD and whine.

    Good luck with that.

WOW! A lot of pounding of this poor guy for raising a legitimate question. I too am unimpressed with Photos. It seems to me like a drive to push people to buy more iCloud space. My rule of thumb is if you have nothing positive/constructive to say in a forum.....don't say it (seems I'm breaking my own rule here;)

Use of the iCloud Library is optional, exercise your option to NOT use it.

Photos will store the library in your pictures folder on your Mac.

Does your rule include posting inaccurate information?

But then you are left with a warning (that cannot be disabled or ignored) every time you boot up your mac. The only way to get rid of it is to go into Sys Prefs storage management. Of course the emphasis during this process is on buying more storage.

Does Apple employ trolls to roam their forums?

What warning message? Post a screenshot of it.

Someone (but not this "troll") may come along and try to help, try not to insult them.

    Bye.
