Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re concerned about potential international-roaming charges and want to know how to avoid them. Take a look at the article linked below which provides a lot of great information using your iPhone while traveling in another country.

May 13, 2015 9:47 AM in response to Jason Lby algapple1,Thanks, Jason. I am concerned about potential international roaming charges, and the link you provided definitely helped.
I was originally planning on bringing my iPhone 4S to Israel, picking up a local SIM with unlimited data and pay-as-you-go voice and text for local calling, and using iMessage and other apps to call home or text with friends and family. However, I was concerned about being charged for outgoing texts when using message apps such as iMessage.
However, it looks like I am going to scrap this plan. Although my phone is unlocked, both Apple and Verizon told me that in order to use the foreign SIM, I need to backup my phone, do a factory reset, and then put in the new SIM. However, I will not have a computer with me on the trip, so I will have no easy way of restoring my data back to the phone. In addition, since my phone is global with Verizon, I would worry that I might rack up charges with Verizon should I accidentally hit a CDMA tower in Israel. This all seem like a lot of trouble to go to in order to use my iPhone while traveling. My friends with Android phones simply have to put the new SIM in the phone, turn off CDMA, and they are good to go.
Looks like the best solution is for me to turn off roaming and cellular data when I get to Israel, and just use my phone when I have a WiFi connection. I hate to carry two devices around with me, but I guess I can pick up a rental phone for local calling and texting. Either way, the information your provided was helpful.
