Q: New Photos app won't recognize/import GoPro files like iPhoto did

Why won't the new Photos app recognize jpg's and mp4 on a GoPro Hero3+ like iPhoto did.  I plug in the camera, and Photos (Yosemite 10.10.3) opens and shows thumbnails of both jpg and mp4 videos that look fine.  Click Import and the new iMac Retina chugs for a while and then generates the unrecognized file type or may not contain valid data message for all of them.  It recognizes them enough to line them up as thumbnails, and even label them as jpg's and videos, but it won't import them.  I think the problem is with the OS X update, because I downloaded GoPro Studio and tried to import them using that path, and even GoPro's own software can't import them off the camera.  IPhoto, before the OS X upgrade and switch over to Photos always worked fine.  Nothing has changed except the elimination of iPhoto in favor of Photos.


Also, believe there should be a category in the Photos discussion for Import.  This really isn't an organizing or editing question.

    See if you can use Image Capture or a card reader to download the photos and videos to a folder on the Desktop. Then see if you can view the photos with Preview and play the videos with Quicktime Player.  If you can try importing into Photos.  If you still fail to import then we've narrowed down the culprit to Photos and you can report it to Apple via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

    Thanks Old Toad,

     

    Image capture tries as well but no dice.  It shows a screen full of thumbnails, but won't import the file(s). It puts a shadowed bar across the thumbnail window saying "Importing "GOPROXXX.JPG" and then exits with an import error (-9912). 

     

    I have noticed as well that in the 10.10.3/Photos setup, the computer does not seem to mount the camera as a disk/diskimage in the finder window or in Photos the way that iPhoto always does/did.

    I it's not Photos that does that, it is the system.

    Have the same problem here, trying to import photos from a GoPro Hero3+ only results in a PTPcamera module crash, cleanmymac 3 shows that, and is does nothing at all for a long time!

    You're using one of the worst malware apps we've seen here in the forums. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

     

    1 - Name contains cleanmymac

    2 - Name contains macpaw

     

    Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

     

    FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

     

    Try using a card reader with the GoPro memory card to upload the files to a folder on the Desktop and import from there.

     

    Also download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

    It's not the best out there but it does help me a lot without doing a lot of work... and that does not help me with the GoPro import problem. The cleanmymac stuff is for another thread!

    I'm having the same issue as well. I've reset my SD card and it is still doing the same error. I've even tried transferring files via the GoPro app to my iPhone and then trying to upload to Photos and it still presents the same error. I don't understand what the error is because the file plays fine on my iPhone and the GoPro but it doesn't want to import to my Mac!

    Bump.  I hope apple is working on fixing this.  I'm surprised there aren't more people on this thread.   I can't get anything off my gopro with photos.

    I'm having the same issue, however, not GoPro.  Not able to import from Canon Vivia HD Camcorder; previously imported into iPhoto with no issues. Haven't found any solutions yet (although Old Toad's recommendation to use EtreCheck did show me I need more RAM following the latest Yosemite upgrade - so thanks

     

    Help on the import issue?

    I'm having the same issue, while trying to import GoPro JPG that are already on my HD. Very frustrating.

    Not sure if I am just an anomaly, but I too was experiencing a connectivity issue with both Photos AND Image Capture (not recognizing my Hero 3 at all)...or at least I thought I was, which is how I found this thread.  However, I discovered that if I power-on my GoPro Hero 3 BEFORE plugging it into my Mac Mini (OS X 10.10.3), Photos found the camera without issue and completely imported all videos and still images with aplomb!

     

    This is a subtle difference -- if you plug your GoPro into your Mac while it is powered off, you'll get the standard red charging light, indicating that it is charging, from your USB port.  If you attempt to power on the GoPro from this state, it'll simply beep several times and remain in charging mode (powered off).  However, if you unplug your GoPro from the Mac, power it on, THEN plug it in to your Mac, it'll display the universal USB logo on the front screen of the GoPro and your Mac will mount it; allowing you to import into Photos, iMovie or Image Capture, without issue.

     

    Again, YMMV but this has worked for me ever since I discovered this subtle, yet critical, trick.  Hope this helps.
