imap.virginmedia.com SSL on/ticked Port 993
smtp.virginmedia.com SSL on/ticked Port 465

Under settings>mail contacts calendar, fetch data, is your ntl account set to fetch & if so is the time interval set?

thanks for all your help. apple very kindly gave me support via chat but we were still unable to fix the problem.
we switched the iPad off and on
re checked all the email settings - they were correct
we then reset the ipad.... Still not working so we agreed that I should take it to the local apple store in Leicester
WEnt to to the Apple Store in Leicester:
x2 really great guys (technicians - one was called Dill Sagoo-) quickly diagnosed the issue - it was a glitch in the operating system, so deleted and reinstalled the operating system and all is now perfect.... The guys at Leicester did such a great job I will probably buy an apple laptop and have agreed to call back when they are not so busy to try out the new apple watch..... Which is bit bad because my company repairs Rolex, cartier, tag, omega and Breitling watches... but they have taken my business card and will get in touch to get their old mechanical watches serviced..
