Q: how do i delete an empty album or event in photos

Reveal the sidebar in Photos  with ⌥⌘S,  the select the folder or the album you want to delete. Ctrl-click it and select "Delete folder" or "Delete  album".

There are no events in Photos - during the migration all events were converted to albums

To delete an album right click on it in the sidebar and delete  - or click on albums to show all albums and select several albums a right click on one and delete them all

Your iPhoto Events were migrated as Photos Albums.

Photos does not support Events, so I'm not sure what you mean by stating that Photos created new Events.

To delete empty Albums or Folders, right-click on them and select Delete...

I can delete the pictures in the event folders just fine, but I cannot get rid of the folders.

Photos has predefied smart albums that you cannot delete.

Hold down the ctrl-key while clicking. It will be the same as right clicking.  That works with any mouse.

You can enable right clicking for the mouse in the System/Mouse/Point & Click preference pane:

In my conversion there were HUNDREDS of empty albums created in the iPhoto Events folder.  Yes, I can delete them individually.  Is there some way to multi-select those empty albums and do a mass delete?

If you delete the iPhoto Events folder the albums inside should also be deleted. Are the albums still in this folder? Otherwise drag the albums into the folder.
