Q: How do I turn off autoplay of video content in Safari?

Can someone tell me how to disable the auto play-back of video content when browsing on my iMac in Safari 8.0 (OS X 10.10)?  The question goes for all sites that post video content to start playing as soon as the page finishes populating.  If I want to watch the video, I want to proactively click "play," rather than have it start playing automatically.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    Hi ...

You can have control using the ClickToFlash Safari Extension here >  https://extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.hoyois.safari.clicktoflash-GY5KR723 9Q

After it's installed, you can access ClickToFlash from Safari > Preferences > Extensions.

Thank you for the link.  I followed it and installed ClickToFlash.  However, I too (lola839) am confused about what to do next.  When I open Safari>Preferences>Extensions I end up in the "Extensions Gallery" with no further direction as to how to stop the autoplay of videos.  Can you or anyone else provide additional instructions?

I figured out that I was clicking on "Safari Extensions" rather than "Preferences" so now I see where to enable ClickToFlash.  You can disregard my prior comment.  However, even with ClickToFlash enabled video content is still automatically playing.  Can someone walk me through what settings I should use to prevent autoplay?

I agree. Even with ClicktoFlash enabled, autoplay is not disabled in OS X 10.10.1. Does someone have this figured out?

For OS X Yosemite 10.10 set the following in Safari Preferences:

    1. In the Advanced tab, set "Stop plug-ins to save power".

    2. In the Security tab, set "Allow Plug-ins" by Internet Plug-ins and then click "Website Settings..." for it.

    3. Find the media type you want to stop auto-play in the left hand column(s).

Most non-Flash videos (mp4/h264/HTML5 video) will be "QuickTime".

    4. Set "When visiting other websites" to Ask to click to start, or Block for permanent disabling.

    5. Click "Done".

Safari will play the video(s) on a page for a brief period before stopping to save power, and the noise will cease.

Clicking on the play button on the video will start the video and audio again for viewing when desired.

Oh, thank you for this! These news sites and their auto-play videos were driving me nuts! Now I've shut them up.

Suggested solutions are not working for me. Videos on cnn.com continue to autoplay, even after safari restart or hardware reboot. I've tried multiple variations of options in System and Safari and ClickToFlash and videos continue autoplaying. Very annoying.

    I'm on 10.9  using Safari 7.

What I noticed is that I'm not getting flash ads anymore; I'm getting mp4 ads. I don't see where there's any autoplay flag like you have with flash so my thinking is there's got to be a systems setting somewhere that says not to autpplay an mp4.

Click2Flash obviously won't work and neither does Click2Plugin. At least for me. I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed.

    ClickToFlash

    Media Player tab

Initial Behavior (half way down):  Preload

    Instant Autoplay:  unselect

This seems to stop autoplay for me, but allows me to click on the video and have it run immediately if I wish.

osx 10.10.3 / Safari 8.0.5 (10600.5.17) - also seems to work on my Mountain Lion iMac

Why is this so hard. In google it's one setting and it applies across all my computers. "It Just works" in one step, not 10-15.

Didn't really think I was being snarky. However, when you are judgmental I guess thats what you could see. And thanks so much for the helpful suggestion on how to turn off auto play. I still have not been able to accomplish this task.

Re-read your original post. I misinterpreted. I thought you were saying why is this so hard for you (ME)? Now I see you're saying how google is easier. Sorry. I was not being judgmental - ha - I thought you were judging my original question. Funny.
