Q: Lingering issues with Photos
So like most of the other companies here, I had the same issues. Took forever to "prepare" and "upload" and everything seemed to be broken. I was coming from an iMac and Macbook Air configuration, with an iPhone and iPad, too. I just wanted to get the iMac and MBA in sync before I worried about the other devices. I tried to be patient after reading many posts here, especially those of Old Toad, leonie and Terence Devlin and decided to do one at a time starting with the iMac set at "Download full originals" So I had an original library on at least one machine. the prep and uploading of 19,000 photos and 500 videos took about 12 days. But I let it run as recommended.
When that was finally completed, I turned on Photos on the MBA, set to "optimize" because I wasn't sure I had enough space on the MBA, fullying expecting another long run...which is what happened, too. As someone in some post here said,"how do you expect to get the pictures loaded? fairy dust?' True dat, and though my patience has been tried by this whole Photos debacle, I persevered and once the Photos apps on my iMac and MBA indicated in their preference panels that they were updated I thought I could rest easy...except none of the numbers matched.
The iMac Library said I had19040 photos and 512 videos for a total of 19552 items.
The MBA Library said I had18,940 photos and 511 videos for a total of19451 items.
THE GOOD: All my Projects from Aperture had been successfully migrated to Photos although now called iPhoto Events. My organizing structure from Aperture had been retained. That made me happy. Also, I know that I did have some duplicate images in the mix and after everything had been uploaded on both machines and it seemed that after I let the process run it's course on both machines, some of the duplicates were not carried over. iCloud seems to be culling duplicates in this upload process, although it would be nice to get a direct statement from them about how their handling this whole mess/process.
Or perhaps they're trying to find someone/anyone who can straighten out their inability to handle syncing (e.g.. iDisk, Mobile Me, photo stream, iCloud, iTunes Match).
Also Good: I've gotten used to new workflow where new pictures from my devices or shared from my Macs appear at the bottom of my Moments. Before anything else, I add keywords thenI move them over to my (now) iPhoto Events that successfully migrated. Everything seems to stick at least from the iMac to the MBA. Moments later they appear in the same Event with the keywords appended.
So that's the good. After letting everything upload for a long time, it appeared that everything was working as advertised including pictures from my devices appearing on the Macs.
Except the numbers didn't match up. Not on the iMac, not on the MBA, and not on the iCloud website when I bothered to log in from Safari.
So I decided to do it the old-fashioned, pre Photos way, (when I would manually compare my Aperture libraries on both my iMac and MBA). Photos promised -I thought-this would be a thing of the past. But here I was stuck with differing numbers so ***, had to go through the same process of comparing 2 different libraries on 2 different machines,
I was able to work around the incompetence of the phukers who rewrote and pushed out Photos.
Or so i thought.
in my search for a solution as to why the numbers don't match,
I started going Event-by-event on both machines side-by-side. This would be easier if the Apple Engineers? actually had ever used a program like Aperture which listed the Photo count in the sidebar. I found some pictures in a few events where the thumbnails didn't match.
Based on advice I have read here, I decided to try the Repair Database suggestion of some. I shan't refer you further to that advice, because that's what I tried this morning, and it completely re-set, seemingly, everything so that my iMac Library is again Updating- currently at 14370 to upload.
and the MBA is at 14,476 to upload
and none of the 6 pictures I have taken today on my iPhone (photo stream ) have appeaed in Moments in Photos, Though when I pause Photos on the MBA it tells I have 6 photos to add.
This Photo app is a ******* mess.
