First, perform the following simple procedure:

    NVRAM reset:

    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

    Then:

What you describe is not likely to be related to anything you did with your friend's iPod, but a number of other problems exist that should be corrected. Specifically, the existence of CleanMyMac, adware, and a modified Hosts file. All of them will be addressed by following the Recovery Procedure below. Once you accomplish that, you will be in better position to diagnose the black screen.

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?

    Screen Shot 2014-09-11 at 7.30.53 PM.png

Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage.

    hi john

I've done the NVRAM PRAM stuff and it still goes black but less often at the moment..

if its not the logic board battery what could it be ??

at the moment I'm just about to do a few months work for somebody doing video etc and really don't want this happening all the time..

so a new ssd could be a few months off in reality

so what is this fault if any ?

you mention adware ? and cleanmymac... my problem is that I've been using it for a while, well over 2 years so no back up with a clean OS X on it and is been passed on every time I've updated the OS X - I'm on Yosemite..

    regards

    andy

As I wrote, the black screen problem is unlikely to be related to software, but the specific software I mentioned is notorious for causing problems and must be removed. Once you accomplish that, you will be in better position to diagnose the black screen.

A backup is a necessity if you intend to have Apple perform that diagnosis. There is no guarantee they will retain the information it contains.

And the thing to do with the battery on the logic board is that the reason my screen is going black ?

That is certainly a possibility, and would be an inexpensive fix. Only Apple can make that determination though.

27" iMac August 2011. I thought the LED backlight might be the issue, managed to break the front screen getting it off (cracked) still not resolved it. Both my Externl Del monitors are working, made one primary but it still sees the imac screen, even though it is black.

I have been having the same black screen issues for close to 4 months now.
I have iMac 27 inch mod 2011, 3.1Ghz Intel core i5, 12Gb RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1 Gb RAM onboard
    1Tb HDD
I am running OSX El Capitan version 10.11.6

Hard Drive failed on me about 9 months ago and I had it replaced (my applecare ran out the day before the HDD bit the dust - go figure). Ran fine since then

When the black screen issue started, I sought advice from Apple and I was advised to do the command-option-P-R keystroke sequence  to clear some parameters.
That helped initially but I see no actual benefit in doing it anymore.....it makes no difference as the problem persists.

I was then advised to restart in safe-mode to see if it still happens, and the answer is YES, less frequently than a normal boot, but yes it still happens.

I was advised to remove any suspect software, including things like cleanmymac. BTW that app  (version 3) has been on the system for close to 2 years with no issue till now, but ya...I did as advised and its all gone now....and for a brief period (after refreshing the system) I had about 1 hour of usage under normal conditions (see below) - -but yet the black screen issue is back.

At one point I was told it could be a faulty LED inverter board. So that has been replaced. No difference the problem is STILL there.

So what do I consider normal conditions:
Where can turn the screen brightness up higher than 3 bars. Right now, if I go over 3 bars, the black screen issue starts and just keeps on happening no matter how many times I restart, do the reset sequence above, use option-command-eject to sleep and unsleep. The only thing that solves it is to keep the brightness 3 bars or less (which with my vision as a 52yr old with glasses is just terrible to work with).

BTW even sometimes at the 3 bars setting if the temperature goes above 33 degrees C...it will black screen
I have installed SMC  fan controller software to allow me to monitor the temperature and toggle the RPMs on the fans to try and keep the system from getting to 33 degrees to quickly - right now it is hovering around 28....thats the best I can get. That temperature, and 3 bars on brightness at least I can struggle through to get some work done...but it is NOT ideal by any means.

At one point, after the OS software restore (post install of the new LED inverter board) I did get about 90 minutes of usage where I had the screen brightness a few bars above half-way....

I thought I had the problem licked at that point and BOOM! black screen

So I am at a loss.
I tried all the reset  and clearance sequences proposed by Apple support
I have done an OS re-install (and limited all the software I would normally restore). I followed  the process as per below support note for my restore..
I had had hardware replaced only to find it made no difference. Safe more makes no difference, login as different user made no difference.

    Any Ideas??

I have done the command-option-P-R routine countless times.
I have done the safe-mode start countless times

I have done AHT countless times (it never reports any issues)

I have (with Genius bar support) tried a fresh hard drive (problem was still there), and re-installed the OS (El Capitan) 2 x
I have taken it to the Authorised repair  countless time

    - they have run a VST test and indicated no issues with hardware. Despite that, I was still advised that it could be hardware related and this subsequently led to replacing the LED backlight inverter board. - That cost me a whopping $230 and solved nothing. The unit still black screens.
    - it went back to Apple Authorised repair for more testing - and they charged me $100 for that, and again said - "no issues found, it could just be old-age"
    - it just recenty came back from Apple Authorised repair after they agreed to do a video card replacement under the known issues replacement program.....and to my utter astonishment......the problem is still there.
If I set the scree brightness to anything more than 2 bars - BLACK SCREEN

Now they are saying - "well, we really don't know....clearly not sofware, not any of the normally suspect hardware....maybe your LCD screen or your main logic board is shot, or maybe it is just time to get a new Mac"

The shock-WOW look on my face must have been bloody priceless...and all that I can think is...so what now?

    Has everything possible been tried?

Although it is a long shot, the only other thing I can think of to suggest is to do a clean install. That should rule out any possible software problems.

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones. If you want to make a clean install, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair  the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button to select GUID. Reinstall the OS. Restart normally and test.

    Clean Install

    Hi Eric

Sadly I have done that already

I did a fresh install of the OS when I was doing my troubleshooting - in order to rule out any software issues
The Authorised repair center did a fresh install as well - despite my giving them the system after I had done one
They they did a complete HDD swap and fresh install on the new HDD...

NONE of this has had any resolving impact on the black screen issue
