Q: iPhone 6 Plus touch id not working

My touch id hasnt been working lately, i updated to ios 8.1 and it still worked, just about 3 days ago it recognizes my finger print about 1 out of 8 times, also when i try to add another finger print it says that it is undetectable, ive tried with multiple fingers and other people and it still says it cant, nothing else seems to be wrong with the phone just this

I've been comparing notes with everyone I know who has an iPhone. The overwhelming consensus is that their touch IDs don't work, they get annoyed, and turn  it off. I sure hope Apple gets on the ball and fixes this.  At least with the Apple Watch you don't need touch ID to use Apple pay.

Apple isn't checking these message boards and their technicians aren't escalating this problem to higher levels within the company who can initiate updates. Suggest that you go to their Product Feedback site and relate your experience. However, I have done that twice with no results  to show.

I've heard rumors of an iCar. God help us if the Touch ID people are working on that.

For me, Touch ID doesn't work when plugged in...it does work when not plugged in.  (this is a new iPhone out of the box yesterday).  Im plugged in to a standard lightning cable and into USB on my Mac.

    >>>>> [Try removing the case from the phone, and hold the iPhone in your hand, ...and make sure you are using a new USB lightning cable plugged in to an apple device or the original apple converter (square block plug)]

For me, unplugged: touch ID works every time; plugging it in, touch ID works intermittently maybe 1 of 20 trys.  Its like it doesn't see the presence of a finger.

I reset all my finger prints -no improvement.

I called Apple care.   During my call with Apple-care, one of the first 5 questions they asked me was "does this problem occur when plugged-in or not" --(obviously they know of some issue). ...... they made me hard-reset and also Erase all data and reload.  After reload of my data, still have the problem... in fact it could not perform the Touch ID Setup activity while plugged in.

I tried multiple lightning cables.  Reset again as a "new phone"... the touch ID was still intermittently not working during the Touch ID Setup.

I finally removed my case (silicone apple case)  ... It turns out that possibly there is an electrical grounding problem with iPhone 6.  When my hand is touching the back metal case of the phone, the touch ID works even when plugged in.  If I am not touching the metal case on the back, touch ID has problems when plugged in.

I have mine under control now. Occasionally I will reset my fingerprints and that helps. I also notice that temperature can effect it; the beast works better in a warmer environment. Also, after I wash my hands it is non responsive but when I get up in the morning it works perfectly. I still think that Apple needs to get some more bugs out of it.

While the suggestions are valid, the number of posts to this forum would cause even the most junior tech. to think that there is some larger issue than people just not being familiar with the device.  My iPhone 6+ also has intermittent functionality when charging.  However, it does seem to work on my car charger, AND my iPad charger.  Could it be that, when charging on the "standard" iPhone charger there isn't enough power coming in to charge the battery AND power the sensor(s)?  That would explain why a higher amperage charger would work and the others not.

    Thoughts??

    this fix worked for me

How to fix Touch ID not working in iOS 8.3

    1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad
    2. Tap on Touch ID & Passcode
    3. Enter your Passcode or Password
    4. Toggle iTunes & App Store to OFF
    5. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.
    6. Reboot your iPhone or iPad. (Here's how)
    7. Enter your Passcode or Password at the Lock screen
    8. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad
    9. Tap on Touch ID & Passcode
    10. Enter your Passcode or Password
    11. Toggle iTunes & App Store to ON

That should fix any issues with using Touch ID to authorize App Store or iTunes Store purchases.

Issue just started yesterday as ouch ID stopped working all together. When I go to system to make sure it is still active, the screen comes up then immeadialtly says Touch ID setup failed and try again. Seems to be no getting it back.

    There is only one solution:

    Replace screen/touch ID combo.

    I had all those troubles.

Then I dropped my phone - the screen glass shattered.

I had a new screen installed and this comes with a touch id sensor - they are one unit.

Since then touch ID worked flawlessly.

If you are still under warranty, get an appointment at the Bar and have it replaced (don't go to a real bar and use the money on whisky. Won't help. Use it to get a new screen / touch ID combo)

I updated to 8.4 on my iPhone 6 and Touch ID no longer works.

None of my previously enrolled fingerprints are being recognized/read after I updated to iOS 8.4, so I decided to delete them an re-enroll.

Unfortunately, every time I try to enroll a finger it tells me to use a different finger as the one I'm using is not readable.

    UPDATE:

I just replaced my iPhone 6 and Touch ID is now working flawlessly with iOS 8.4.

Replace those faulty phones people if you still have warranty or AppleCare+.

So....Don't do any activities if you want to use the touch ID?

It's really frustrating to have to redo my thumbprint every other day. Just not worth the trouble anymore. The time spent trying to open my phone with touch ID is much more than just typing in the now 6 digit pw. . . annoying.

I started using my index finger and touch ID has worked 90+ percent of the time for the past few months.
