Q: iPhone 5 not charging

Hi,

My iPhone 5 will not charge has anyone else got this problem?

When I plug the lightning cable in its as if the phone registers this but it will not charge.

I am also unable to transfer any data across to the phone.

The phone has been rebooted several times but still no luck,

Thanks

Jack

I had a similar problem with my iPhone 5. I cleaned the nodes, and that didn't work. I tried different cables and they did work, so I had the cable exchanged.  It was very hasslefree, almost no questions asked at the Apple Store.

seems like the charging issue once again came after updating iOS. My iPhone 5 have been after updating to iOS 8.3 difficult to charge, sometimes it starts charging after been plugged in for long time (upto 1/2 h), sometimes it will not charge before there are less than 10% battery power left. I have tried cleaning the charging slot witch seemed clean. The last 12 hours i had the lightning cable connected with no result, until now when the charging sudenly started. With my iPad there are no prob using the same lightning cable. Allso (even as the input direction of the lightningcable are reversible) try turning it around if charging not starts after 30 min. Still, this problem are a disaster! When wake up in the morning with no battery power.

What should I do if my phone doesn't charge AT ALL?

    • I've tried five different cords, three different outlets(one at a business and two at home), I used my laptop, I used the USB port on my alarm clock.
    • I've tried genuine Apple cords and charging cubes and also non-Apple ones. Nothing. No matter what, all I get is the screen telling me I need to plug it in.
    • I left it plugged in for almost two hours. And it's plugged in now. Still nothing.
    • Numerous times for up to a minute I held the home button and lock screen to try to reset the phone, still nothing.
    • I think it's the charging port. I checked it out and I don't see any lint or anything, and I don't have that spray. I tried using a clean makeup brush to take any debris out, I've blown into the charging port as hard as I could, still nothing.

What should I do? My phone has my schedule on it and all my phone numbers. Unfortunately I have let technology take over my life so I don't have any of these things saved anywhere else.

Same problem as my daughter's iPhone 5c. Tried all of the above then took it to the Apple Store where they tested it and told me it had a hardware fault and was dead - coincidentally, this also happened straight after the upgrade to IOS8.3!!!!

The upshot was that she ended up getting a replacement phone (which didn't charge either) but the second replacement, fingers crossed, has been functioning for the best part of a week now!!!

Incidentally, if your phone is a 5, on the Apple Help pages there is some info about an iPhone 5 Battery and On/Off Button replacement programme - not applicable to 5c or 5s, but may be worth checking out?

Thanks for the info. Same here - fluff and dirt deep inside the socket was preventing proper charging ability. Obviously a result of putting my phone in pocket - now to consider a belt clip instead!

This worked for me. Give it a go before sending off and potentially paying for an easy fix.

I used a paper clip and removed half a tree out of the charging socket. Worked fine after that, no more jamming the charger at odd angles. I also noticed the charge clicked in better.

(On another note try to avoid non authorised 3rd party cables (yes i know Apple ones are a rip off!!) I bought what I thought was a good 3rd part one last time and it fried the battery and ended up having to get a new phone!

Multiple cables, still had the problem that if I slightly nudged/bumped my iPhone while it was charging it would stop until I jiggled the lightning cable again.  Came across a thread about dusty lightning ports so I purchased a box of "GUM Proxabrush Go-Betweens Cleaners Wide" and decided to give them a try... Wow, a LOT of dust/lint/powder came out of my iPhone's lightning port!  Now my lightning cables' connections are solid again.

That's the same thing my iPhone is saying. I tried updating to the ios 8.1.3 from the ios 7 and when I tried it said verifying update. So like all updates my phone shut off. When it shut off I thought it would cut back on but instead it had the charger (like the one seen on the dead battery screen) and an arrow pointing at an iTunes emoticon. So I connected my phone to my up-to-date hp computer and it still did nothing. I really need my phone, so if you get any answers PLEASE let me no.

I always keep my phone 5S in my pocket. I have had the problem of the connector not connecting properly and charge. I always thought that the problem must be the connector on the cable. But no, it's the connector hole full of LINT !!! which I could never see. I used a tooth pick and was amazed as how much lint was in my iPhones connector hole. Problem solved Thanks forum

Was having the same issue on my iPhone 5.  I tried my iPhone 6 cable, my iPad Mini cable and none of them were allow the device to charge.  The iPhone 5 had been put away for about a year, and was stored in its original packaging.  I finally reset the phone by holding the home key and the power key down, until a Whitre screen with th apple logo appeared. It booted up - even though the batter indicator had one very thin red line on the battery icon (previously). I plugged it into a power source (using the original cable that came with my iPhone 5 and all is well!  Whew!

Also faced the issue that I could not charge my iPhone 5 using USB from a Windows 7 computer. Checked most of solutions over here before realizing I did not have any Apple drivers installed on my system. After installing the USB drivers (part of the iTunes installer) I was able to charge my phone.
