Q: airport express client can't find wifi network

I have a wifi network using the Asus AC-RT68U router. I also have two Airport Express routers that are connected to HIFI in two different rooms. I want to connect them to my Asus AC-RT68U as clients (not extending). Problem is that I can't find my wifi network in the list of available networks in the airport config tool. I understand that extending a network using an AE need another Apple router. But I have connected as a client to non apple networks before. What have i done wrong this time? My apple TV connects to the network without any problem.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

If you haven't already, try temporarily moving both AirPort Express base stations to the same room as the Asus router in order to connect them. Also be sure to perform a "factory default" reset on both. Your MacBook Pro should then see both base stations as new Wi-Fi networks with names something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Select either and the AirPort Utility should start up so that you can configure it. Do the same for each. Once done, move the base stations to the desired locations.
