Q: Why doesn't the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) support Target Display Mode? And what are my alternatives for using it as an alternative for my mid-2012 MacBook Pro? (both running 10.10.3)

Why doesn't the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014, 4 GHz, 32 GB RAM) support Target Display Mode? I am trying to use it as an external monitor for my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (2.5 Ghz, 8 GB RAM)? Both machines are running 10.10.3. I just purchased a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable, reading that that was my solution. But TDM does not launch, and just read that it is not supported on this latest iMac. What are my alternatives? Yosemite screen sharing shows my laptop screen on the iMac display, but it remains the same size as the laptop.
