May 20, 2015 2:17 PM in response to Tom Nelsonby Linc Davis,Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder named "ByHost" should open. Look inside it for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver" or "com.apple.ScreenSaver". There may be several such files. Move them all to the Trash.
Log out or restart the computer. Test. If the problem is resolved, empty the Trash and recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

Thanks for your suggestions. However, it didn't change my hang problem in system preferences/screensaver. Here are the files I removed from Preferences/By Host:
file:///Users/ten3/.Trash/com.apple.screensaver.A331F083-5AAE-5A80-97F9-AF9FFFE4 E143.plist
file:///Users/ten3/.Trash/com.apple.ScreenSaver.iLifeSlideShows.A331F083-5AAE-5A 80-97F9-AF9FFFE4E143.plist
file:///Users/ten3/.Trash/com.apple.ScreenSaverPhotoChooser.A331F083-5AAE-5A80-9 7F9-AF9FFFE4E143.plist
There is another preference file in the parent folder users/preference:
<file:///Users/ten3/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist>
which I did not remove.
What's funny is that I added another user as an admin. Logging into that account and going to System Preferences/Desktop/ and System Preferences/Screensaver works perfectly, though I am using on of the default screensaver folders, e.g. National Geographic. In the Pref/By Host folder are the same three screensaver files as in my user acct, and the same <Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist> as above.
Any thoughts, I'm still stumped. Tried reinstalling Yosemite last night, and also, tried going back a month into time machine backup. Neither worked.
Thanks for your help.

May 21, 2015 8:58 AM in response to Tom Nelsonby Linc Davis,Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take the action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

May 21, 2015 9:51 AM in response to Tom Nelsonby Richard Groff2,I've been trying to fix this bug for months now. I found this to be a solution so far. I've restarted, woken from sleep, it's been several days, and my PREFERRED screensaver now seems to stay put. No more National Geographic! I'll keep you posted if it comes back, though.
Just do what's on this page. It worked for me!

Thanks for your support, however I still have the hang problem when I click on System Preferences/Screensaver. Erasing those files cleared the desktop picture and I'm able to change from default to a folder in my Pictures folder, but if I click on the Screensaver tab Sys Pref hangs.
Logged on as a new user and the preferences work.
Still trying.
Thanks,
Tom

May 22, 2015 4:49 AM in response to Richard Groff2by Richard Groff2,Nope, nope, nope. This didn't work either. I'm completely stumped. As a work-around I'm just keeping Preferences minimized in the dock until Apple fixes this stupid bug!
The other stupid bug that I can't seem to fix is my audio output preference. It keeps reverting to my monitor speakers instead of Line Out to my powered speakers. That seems to stick with the Preferences minimized, too, though.
Apple! Get this fixed! Steve must be spinning in his grave.

Sorry to say - deleting these files/preferences has not solved the problem. My basic problem is still that when I click on the <Screensaver> Tab in System Preferences, my laptop hangs.
Still trying.
