May 17, 2015 4:28 PM in response to Jon Levinsonby dowdesign,I've been coming across this issue for the last couple of months, running a Mac OSX 10.8 server and some users (not all) experiencing loss of finder aliases, i've been following forums and pulling my hair out.
Today I came across an issue with another client, I did a clean rebuild of Yosemite and reconnected to server via Finder. This user was still having permission issues on Photoshop after a clean rebuild.. The server permissions to photoshop file were correct, another user in the company with same permissions having no issue writing to file.
We found that Finder on the newly rebuild yosemite machine is connecting to the Mac server using SMB: automatically, this was confirmed after doing a "get info" on a file on the server giving us the full path of the file showing smb://192.168.1.x
My understanding is that finder should connect automatically using AFP? So after a clean rebuild why is finder connecting as SMB automatically? Nothing wrong with AFP on the server and the other user who had no issues saving is connecting automatically via AFP on her finder.
I had to force this newly rebuilt machine to connect via AFP so then my thought is are disappearing aliases caused by finder connecting to the server between AFP and SMB randomly? If a user is creating an alias one day connected via SMB to a folder then another day Finder connects as AFP could that be the cause for the alias to disappear?

May 22, 2015 9:11 AM in response to Jon Levinsonby s-car-go,Hi all
I too have issues with items disappearing from the sidebar. In my case, having bruised my head off the monitor for a few days trying to resolve the issue I'm resorting to you folk to see if anyone has a) the same issue and b) if there is a remedy.
My "SHARED" item has disappeared. I don't have a clue how to reinstate it. Normally I'd simply drag stuff I'm working on to the sidebar for quick, easy access. How does one do that with SHARED?
I'm on a LAN with 3 Macs connected. The other 2 show my machine but my machine shows nothing. Every time I want to connect to one of the other machines I have to go the COMMAND+K route or via the GO menu item in FINDER. Pain in the a··
Any ideas anyone? Help gratefully received.
Personally I think YOSEMITE is the worst release of OSX I've ever installed and I've been on Macs since 8,6
Running:
OSX 10.10.3 on a Mac Mini
2,3Ghz i5 core
4Gb memory

May 29, 2015 4:16 PM in response to s-car-goby Roger30,I Have been having similar problems which I can sometimes remedy by force relaunching Finder. The items that are disappearing for me are my other Mac and drives attached to my Airport Extreme. I am going to try a clean install of Yosemite to see if that will fix Finder. I will post if it works.
Since installing Yosemite I have also had problems with tremendous kernal task CPU usage while using Handbrake. The machine does not crash but comes to a standstill then "catches up" and completes commands amd mouse clicks with no problem but these slowdowns can last close to a minute. That makes the machine pretty useless until I am done with Handbrake.

Jun 5, 2015 12:40 PM in response to Roger30by oskarmatzerath,★HelpfulI was having the same problem, and am a little embarrassed to say how simple the problem was for me.
To fix the issue, I had to hit "Show" when moving the cursor over "Favorites", "Shared", and "Devices" - and then it showed the items again.
It's still a mystery how all the items were gone, as if I'd hit "Hide" on them. I haven't restarted my machine, so if I have any troubles with this issue after that, I'll post a reply to this posting.

Jun 5, 2015 1:44 PM in response to oskarmatzerathby Roger30,I Wish that was the answer for me but I already know about the hide and show trick. I belielve Finder is not dealing properly with network devices. Finder is extremely unstable since my Yosemite upgrade. Forcing Finder and sometimes my Airport Extreme to restart seems to be the only way to get everything to reappear. I am hoping it is a software conflict and that Apple receives enough crash logs to fix it.

Jun 11, 2015 9:22 AM in response to keygitby Colbster182,Yeah this happens to me too. I think it's because some links are from a hard drive that I unplug from at work, so when I get home they don't want to have favourites on drives that aren't connected. What's stupid is that I'll plug back in at work the next day and they're gone. Pretty f'n stupid, Apple. Why don't you learn how people actually use your products and stop messing with our process?

Jun 16, 2015 7:59 PM in response to Jon Levinsonby ernestdusa,Cleaning the DS_Store and ._* hidden files from my network drives fixed the problem of having files disappear randomly in finder that some people mentioned here. However, I would need more people to test it to see if it was just a coincidence.

Jun 24, 2015 8:43 AM in response to Jon Levinsonby StevenPalm,FWIW, seems to be still broken in El Capitan based on reports, so Apple clearly doesn't care about people actually USE Their ocmputers, they have long since given up on us and tailor only to people who want to LOOK AT THEM. That is why the obsession over style and thinness have overcome making computers that actually work.

Jul 6, 2015 7:04 AM in response to dowdesignby brycesteiner,I am also having the same problem with Yosemite.
I am connecting with AFP. It's easy enough to save it in command+k so it always comes up instead of SMB.
I have quite a few Macs and we've been using 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) and none has ever lost favorites. It doesn't matter if they're on the network or not. I had upgraded to Mavericks and had nothing but problems and reverted back. My MBA I upgraded to Yosemite and haven't really had any serious issues other than AFP/SMB and that was resolved with saving my code to ensure I always connect to AFP.
With the good results and 10.10.4 finally being released I decided to upgrade once again from ML to Yosemite. After day one I lose my favorites. I put them back on and on day 2 it did the same thing. Why?
I think I'll be using Time Machine to go back again. This should not be an issue. I need the favorites and this is not optional.

Jul 8, 2015 7:45 AM in response to Jon Levinsonby PhilDx,Same issue for me. Upgraded to 10.10 from 10.8 and now the favorites I added for my server folders are removed every time I lose the server connection. I'm on a laptop that I take home every day so, daily!

Jul 15, 2015 6:12 AM in response to Jon Levinsonby alexander di,This is very annoying. Like others here, I have to re-alias everything whenever I bring my laptop into the office. How do user tests miss stuff like this?
Say what you want about Windows, but if it doesn't work straight away, I can always get it to work. With my Mac, everything just works, until it doesn't and I'm SOL. Not cool, Apple. It's the little things that matter.

Jul 15, 2015 9:09 AM in response to PhilDxby Roger30,Have any of the folks posting here tried forcing Finder to restart? I have found that this will restore all the items in the sidebar. Restarting Finder has also worked to fix afew other issues that pop up from time to time.
Finder seems to be pretty unstable even through the last two updates. Icons for sidebar items keep changing too. Sometimes they appear as computers, other times, they appear with the proper descriptive icons.
Next time you lose your favorites, try restarting Finder. Just make sure you are not copying files or doing other tasks that are controlled by Finder.

Jul 15, 2015 2:37 PM in response to Roger30by brycesteiner,Forcing Finder to Restart has never worked for restoring the favorites. It's worked for other things but not that. I just don't understand how it worked fine in 10.8 but in 10.9 and 10.10 it fails. I also don't understand how Apple ignores the bug reports.
As for Windows it has it's share of stupidity too. This would not force me to ever go back, especially after using 8 and 8.1. XP is still the best in Windows. You can get down to the nuts and bolts so much easier with out the layers and layers that you have to do in 8 and have to turn off in 7.

Jul 17, 2015 11:17 AM in response to Jon Levinsonby artchicny,I am having this same problem in Yosemite. Items that I've added to my favorites sidebar are disappearing, and I am constantly having to re-mount connections to shared network drives. This is one of those little things that makes a big difference in getting stuff done. I work across 4 different network drives every day and it's seriously annoying to have to re-mount almost every time I want to find a file.
Come on, Apple!
