HT201468: How to install Windows using Boot Camp

Learn about How to install Windows using Boot Camp

Q: Why do I keep seeing this message after I partition my disk for Windows 7 and reboot to continue to the installation? " No bootable device found - - please insert a bootable device and press any key to continue "

First, I read the article in the Boot Camp Support area and gathered the materials necessary for the installation.

Second, I watched several videos on how to install Windows 7, using boot camp assistant, (specifically for MacBook Pro 13 inch 2012 model)

Lastly, I followed each step necessary for completing the installation; I purchased a windows 7 professional 64-bit SP 1 software pack from an online store, then I downloaded the .ISO file that came with the purchase. Then I opened up Boot Camp Assistant and did the following; I installed the .ISO file on a USB so I could use this to install windows 7 in future steps, I downloaded the 5.1.2 Boot Camp Support software from this website, then I partitioned my disk. After that, I rebooted my computer and then the BSOD appeared.

I have Mavericks and my software is up to date. I do not understand what the issue is, may someone assist me? I would greatly appreciate it.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

It didn't work I give up honestly. I can't figure anything out on this. Apple needs to get their crap situated. Boot Camp Assistant shouldn't be doing this crap! I spent $100 on a windows 7 Software I won't be able to use!!!!!

There is a point in the installation that a partition for Windows needs to be picked. If the incorrect partition is picked then you will lose your OS X side, hence the recommendation to make a backup. Please make sure you pick the correct partition. In the following example, it is partition 4 named BOOTCAMP.

GPT Fdisk (aka gdisk) can be used to show the partition layout as

    type gdisk

    gdisk is /usr/sbin/gdisk

    sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

    Password:

    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.0

Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their

    partition table automatically reloaded!

    Partition table scan:

      MBR: hybrid

      BSD: not present

      APM: not present

      GPT: present

Found valid GPT with hybrid MBR; using GPT.

    Command (? for help): p

    Disk /dev/rdisk0: 500118192 sectors, 238.5 GiB

    Disk identifier (GUID): 22749ACF-207D-458E-B255-5DF02C39DC2D

Can you post the output of the following commands?

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Did your USB have a '*' in front of the entry as shown in my example?

I couldn't find the diskutil in the gtf thing. Also It doesn't let me choose a partition. it takes me straight to the divider to take out space for windows and then goes straight to the reboot for the installation

So the plan for today is for me to get windows 7 installed without buying an external hard drive (better pick Disk04; Boot Camp) and by using my USB 2.0 16 GB along with the .ISO file I have. So step 1. I need to build my USB in the correct format? step2. I need to partition the disk and make sure I am able to choose a disk at my own will? step 3. get the appropriate software installed and formatted correctly as well?

One other note. my BCA may or may not have been looked at by apple yesterday, so I will probably still need to download the latest software (which I took the time to get [5.1.5621] Manually).

Thank you for helping me with this yesterday! Greatly appreciated!

    1. Can you verify that your USB is a 2.0?

    Bootcamp-Wininstall-USB.png

    2. Can you test using only BCA Option 2 that you can download the BC drivers as necessary?

    3. You currently do not have a BC partition. Did you delete it using BCA?

    4. Can you post the output of

         sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

    1. For USB2, my suggestion is to look at About This Mac -> System Report -> USB. My experiences with PNY have been very mixed. I use a SanDisk Cruzer 2.0 (as shown). I have had 100% success with it. Do you have another USB of 8+GB from a different manufacturer?

    2. You have a disk0s2, but it should be "Macintosh HD" or something similar. Was it named differently before you started your adventures with Bootcamp?

    3. The Fdisk output would also be helpful. Since you already have the USB plugged in, can you look at my example and post the output of

         sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/diskN (where N point to the USB)

    4. In the window with the error report, if you click on Show Details, can you post a screen shot if possible?

    1. I did have a SanDisk Cruzer 2.0 before with my original music on it but I lost it. I just purchased what was in stock at one time because it was required for my EAST LAB class in 2012. I will go by a local store and pick up the appropriate Cruzor.

    2. I was just using Macintosh HD at first but I got the gray screen of death. It wouldn't let me back up any file before restoring but then it also wouldn't let me restore. So it broke off into a separate " partition?" I assume and now I have this.
