Q: Deleted Emails? I delete emails have the box checked to move to trash after deleting. However, when I search my trash folder several of my emails that I deleted are not there?

I try to clean out as many emails as I can a day. In the past I have deleted the ones I have responded to and I have the box checked that says when deleting emails move to trash. I use to be able to search my trash and find past emails but now several of my emails I delete are not there? Where are my emails going that I delete?

    Hi LS7879,

     

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

     

    I understand that some of your deleted emails are no longer appearing in your trash as you would expect. There is a setting I would suggest taking a look at in this situation. Use the attached article to navigate to the Mail options for Permanently erase deleted messages. Do you have a period of time selected in the drop down selection or do you have it set to never? If there is a period of set, those messages may have been erased permanently. 

     

    Mail (Yosemite): Delete messages

     

    Permanently erase deleted messages

     

    Automatically erase messages: Choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, then select an account. Click Mailbox Behaviors, then in the Trash section choose when you want Mail to permanently erase deleted messages.

    If you have an IMAP account whose server is set up to delete older messages, they are erased regardless of your settings.

    Manually erase messages at any time: Choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items, then choose an account.

     

    If you mistakenly delete messages, you can drag them out of the Trash mailbox to another mailbox. Or select them in the Trash mailbox, choose Message > Move to > [mailbox].
