Q: My MacBook Pro has started running slow

Can anyone help?

I have started to experienced my MacBook Pro significantly slowing down.

I have recently installed Yosemite, My first thoughts was that the new OS was too much for my laptop   I found the 35 pager thread that recommended etrecheck and post the results in a new discussion.  I know there are some things I need to clean up too and have deleted significant amounts.

Problem description:

  • Sudden and significant unexplained slow-down of my MacBook Pro.
  • I get a lot of spinning pinwheels just opening and closing applications.
  • Installed Yosemite.

LexSchellings can you possibly help. Looking at past forums you have been looking at etrechecks.

Any help to prolong the life of my Mac would be amazing.

Thank you all in advance.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

You say you recently installed Yosemite but it's a seven month old version (10.10), so I'm not sure how that could have happened. Version 10.10.3 has been out since April and you really need to have that installed to gain maximum benefit from the performance improvements, bug fixes and security updates provided. Run Software Update until it tells you there are no more updates available for you.

After doing some serious house keeping and updating my OS it has improved apart from the time it takes to reboot my system to the point i log in and then for my desktop to be visible. I have attached another report if this helps. over the weekend i will view the log and post a copy.

I have highlighted in pink programs that i have tried to remove be still are visible on the report.

The uTorrent application should be deleted.  It is an open invitation to malware.

CleanMyMac3 should be deleted.  You do not need it and it may well do harm to your MBP and be a contributor to poor performance.  Go to the developers web site for uninstall instructions.

    Ciao.

I am a little unsure on the information that you require. PFB the log from pressing restart to shutting down. This happens as normal and feel there is no issue here. But just for your SA.

I will post an extract form the slowest part of start up in a separate reply.
