of re-installing when or if the online App Store either has none, or can't be reached...
This is one method:
Another would be to make a full system clone, or at least a completely upgraded system
clone after a re-install and perhaps before one adds Time Machine or other content again.
The Disk Utility in OS X can make a disk image, with certain aspects that are helpful; and
then two of the favorite Clone utilities that are retail or shareware (some aspects, run free)
being CarbonCopyCloner from Bombich, and SuperDuper from shirtpocket software sites.
Noted your portion was relocated from an existing topic, so I'm adding this to help any who
may not have known this other aspect. Also, they should know that once you upgrade to a
later OS X from Mavericks (as shipped with a new computer) you really have to be careful
so as to not lose any of the original included Applications, now that Yosemite tries hard to
get you to upgrade and the older ones don't work. And iPhoto is replaced by Photos, & etc.
Since the only way to revert is to have a completely workable accessible archive of 10.9.5.

Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 from the Apple Store, where for about $20. you get a
code that works to download your purchase of 10.8 from the App Store online.

And once you get that, you can update it with a combo file download from Apple
Support, to take it to the last step, using the link in the following page:

If your computer was able to upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.5, it should have no issue
with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 since it is a slightly older version and may work better
in your build model series Mac computer. Be sure to make a backup of your Lion
and any files or projects you have made with the computer, before upgrading it.
There are other updates and things to consider, if you go from Lion 10.7.5 to
Mountain Lion 10.8.5, since the iLife apps and iWork apps may need upgrade
also; the appropriate versions may be available from resellers online, on DVD.

Combo file for the system to be complete, such as most of those usually do... That is
why I supplied the Support link to update Mt Lion, in addition to the Store purchase one.
Just in case there was an added item. A safe bet if the Combo element to 10.8.5 is in the
Main purchased download file, would be to run the Software Update to see what the App
Store may show for it. Some users prefer to have a standalone file, to save offline...

However they can load anything they want. I'd still check the Software updates tab to see... And
it makes all kinds of sense, until they choose to do things differently; then they need not inform us.
