Q: Does not work will not restore for third generation

just shows cable pointing to iTunes. Followed all the directions to restore it. It still does not work. This unit is only 5 months old and only used for less than 10 hours of play time. It is a generation 3 Apple tv

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), with apple tv3

I understand you are having issues with your Apple TV. Below is our resource for restoring the Apple TV.
Followed all the directions to restore it
I'm not sure if this is the document you are referring to, but it does give a couple of different ways to restore your Apple TV. Hopefully one of these will work for you.
