Q: Screen Saver reverts to National Geographic

Several times lately (Yosemite only???), I have discovered my screen saver has reset itself to show National Geographic photos.    And they are usually set to show both my iMac and my second monitor the same photos.

It's easy enough to set back to my desired iPhoto library.   But I wonder what causes it to be reset?

What I haven't figured out is what to do when both monitors are displaying the same photos.   Eventually that problem fixes itself.    Nor what to do when it starts with the same photos in the same order.  (I have a hot corner, and have been testing after I reset it to use my iPhoto library, and each time I turn it on, I get the same photo sequence as before - on both monitors).

I just tried it again - the third time since I started this message - and it's back to National Geographic.

I set it back, this time telling it to shuffle, and both monitors showed different photos as desired.    I should have checked that earlier.    But why doesn't my setting stay?

Yes, I'm going to post this issue even though multiple others have done so because I want apple to see it again and again; and I encourage others to post this again and again until we get a resolution.

I've reported to support and via the feedback route with no help or acknowledgement that there is a problem.

The screensaver constantly reverts back to National Geographic no matter how many times I change it to my personal photos.  Various people have this same issue starting with the very first version of Yosemite.

    Where is the fix?

Why hasn't Apple addressed this or at least responded to all the people in the forums?

This has been going on for months and all the people who post fixes or workarounds are trying to help us, but their fixes/workarounds eventually revert back to National Geographic no matter what we do.

Some of the feedback I've seen from other users and websites include deleting the default folders, writing some code inTerminal in order to clear the default, and manually moving my pictures to the National Geographic folder and deleting the ones already in there (which seems to work for some people).  I will not move my photos to the National Geographic folder because I have thousands in my "favorites" folder in the Photos app (by the way, which I don't find to be as good as the previous version - iPhoto).  Plus, I want the new photos I deem to be a favorite to also be included in the screensaver rotation without me having to manually add more photos to the National Geographic folder every time; not to mention that this will take up more room in memory and hard drive space.  I've tried everything else and it always revert back after a day or so (with or without restarting/rebooting).

Will Apple please acknowledge the issue and finally provide a fix?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), currently using OS X Yosemite (10.10.3) but it has happened since the very first version.

APPLE people, please know that your lack of acknowledgement of the issue makes me want to save my money next time and buy a cheap PC I can replace it new every few years instead of paying your ridiculous prices/fees with no support for your software malfunction. Yours was supposed to be a better product with little to no virus issues; it sure used to be, but not anymore.

My guess is that most people who have come up with a "solution" to this problem have not given enough time for their problem to reappear, but reappear it does, every time. My "solution" was to move the "1-National Geographic" folder to another place on my hard drive. That works -- for a while -- but Yosemite still at some point of its own choosing defaults to the now missing NG folder, and writes on a black screen "No photos found". You would think Apple could figure out (and fix) this bug.

I can't believe that Apple is going the way of Windows... putting out updates that are garbage. This is so annoying, fire your programmers and hire people that can get it right!

for other that may need this:

Best solution I have found is to rename the Nat Geo folder.

First, set your Photo screensaver to what you want it to be.

Go to your Hard Drive root.  Library, Screen Savers, Default Collections.  Then rename the folder 1-National Geographic to something else.  I tacked on Old at the end.

I tried what was suggested and now I have no choices for screen savers>  I got the same as peckurz got on November 5.  I even returned all of the screensaver files from trash and tried again, but nothing!!  What now?  Thanks.

So I had the same problem ever since downloading Yosemite, finally I just made a folder on my desktop called "screensaver" and put the photos I wanted to use in that folder, I then located the "National Geographic" folder using spotlight and deleted the photos in that folder. I then added the entire "screensaver" folder to the National Geographic folder and my problem is now solved.

It's not, of course, a solution to the root problem but it is a work around that lets you have the screen saver you actually want.

Thanks but I just want all of my photos that are in iPhoto to circulate and the folder containing the National Geographic  pix won't hold them.  It's a shame that Apple hasn't yet remedied this situation.

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them all to the Trash.

Restart the computer. Recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab then close it, Test. If the problem is resolved empty the Trash.

Doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again and expecting the screensaver NOT to revert to National Geographic is . . .
