Q: Rebooting with Bootcamp is Broken

Hi Loner T,

I’m running OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks, with Windows 7 installed on a Bootcamp partition, and Parallels Desktop 9 on my MacBook Pro Retina 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with 16 GB RAM, 500 GB Flash Storage.  Everything was working fine across the board, from booting with the Option key to launch OS X or Windows, or from within OS X running Parallels to use Windows 7 which continues to work well.

Recently I discovered that when I hold down the Option key when booting up my computer my only option is Retina or Recovery-10-9.  If I go to my System Preferences/Startup Disk, I can choose either BOOTCAMP Windows or RETINA OS X 10.9.5.  By selecting BOOTCAMP Windows and Restarting, the result is “No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key.”  To proceed, I have to force a Restart, hold down the Option key and my choice again is Retina or Recovery-10-9.

On my Desktop I can see my Bootcamp partition and view the contents of the drive.  I can run Parallels Desktop 9 and Windows 7 without a hitch.  But if I want to boot my computer with Windows that option is broken.  Is there a way to repair Bootcamp without having to start all over by deleting my partition, and reinstalling everything on the Windows side?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 3,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz

I held down the Option key upon reboot and Bootcamp presented me with the option of starting in OS X or Windows!  When I selected Windows, it went through the normal sequence of launching Windows, and tried to install and update device driver software.  Then followed with a message that the device driver software was not successfully installed.  I had no control of the cursor, mouse or any keys.

To make sure Windows was still OK, I launched Windows 7 through Parallels / OS X, and it opened up fine.

I'll try restarting Windows from the Startup Disk:

    Hi Loner T,

Bootcamp is working after a brief round about by launching Windows through Parallels!  What I mean by that is when I did the first reboot, Windows opened with its normal start up sequence, but I couldn't do anything -- my USB Mouse, Bluetooth Keyboard, Retina Keyboard and Wireless Network were all disabled.  So I forced another restart in OS X just to make sure Windows was in tact while still working through Parallels. Now I can reboot with Windows 7 by designating it as the Start-up Disk or by holding down the Option key.  Very nice.  YOU ROCK!  Now I have to figure out how to reactivate my Bluetooth connectivity to my Apple keyboard, Wireless network, and USB Mouse and I should be good to go.

Thank you so much for your help and your patience.  You make it seam too easy!

    Best regards,

    Good morning Loner T,

I've been working Windows 7 from booting and the Parallels side of the fence.  In Parallels everything continues to work without a hitch - My Apple Bluetooth keyboard, USB Mouse, and Wireless Network.

When I boot into Windows, I can only use my Retina keyboard and touch pad to control the system.  Everything else is totally disabled.  Bluetooth Settings are nowhere to be found, I can't access my wireless network, and it doesn't see my USB mouse. Using your scripting through Terminal, is there a way to restore or reinstall all the missing device drivers?

    Thanks!

    Jordan

Can you download the appropriate drivers from System requirements to install Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support? If it says BCA, use BCA to build a USB with the drivers on a USB2 flash drive. Then Boot Camp: Install or repair Boot Camp drivers or Boot Camp: Solve Windows support software installation problems.

I’ve downloaded the recommended drivers for my late 2013 13” Retina to a USB thumb drive, however Windows doesn’t see the drive from booting.  It does see the drive from the virtual side in Parallels.

Is this happening because I don’t know if it is a USB2 flash drive, or might there be another way to place the the BootCamp5.1.5640 folder into the BOOTCAMP partition for installation upon booting?

    Hi Loner T,

I got it!  I restarted in OS X, launched Windows 7 through Parallels and jumped onto the internet.  I was able to download the drivers from my browser directly to Windows and save the installer folder in my BOOTCAMP drive.  Then I quit Windows and in the Mac OS System Preferences, selected BOOTCAMP Windows as my Startup Disk and restarted in Windows 7.  I was then able to open the recommended BootCamp5.1.5640 folder/BootCamp/setup.exe to start the script.  I had to run the script and restart the computer twice in order for all of the drivers to be installed correctly.

I'm back in the saddle and everything is running nicely!  Thanks again for all of your help!

    Best regards,

Excellent. Please post back if you run into any issues. I suggest creating two separate backups, one for each OS, on separate external disks.
