Q: BUG: Exercise app time not showing in Activity app

First thing in the morning, I did an "OPEN" session of "indoor cycling" for 39 minutes, and while both time and calories burned shows in the Exercise app, in the Activity app, my calories burned are counted under "Move", but under "Exercise" did not count the time, still showing 0.

 

Is anyone else seeing this, or was it a fluke for me?

    It's not a flaw, your watch will not record certain activity as exercise unless your heart rate goes high enough for you to actually be exercise. If I go for a run I walk first for about 5 minutes and mostly the first 3 minutes of that are not being recorded which fits because during that time my heart rate was not yet in my exercise zone.

     

    Als when on the eliptical each time my heartrate drops below mu exercise zone because I am catching my breath, this time wil not be recorded.

     

    I consider this a feature, otherwise you could just sit and turn on your exercise app and fill your exercise ring whilst eating a pizza

    I've heard this theory before so I tested it. First I did 30 minutes on the elliptical at a heart rate of around 125 bpm. (I use a chest strap heart rate monitor so I can be sure of my heart rate.) The Activity app recorded this as 30 minutes of exercise. Then I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, also at around 125 bpm. The Activity app failed to record this. Last I did 30 minutes on a stationary bike this time at around 115 bpm. Again the Activity app recorded this.

     

    Indoor Walk is not recognized as exercise by the Activity app, whatever the heart rate.

     

    Another problem with Indoor Walk is that the distances and calories are about half of what they should be.

    OK. Based on the post from Cwadagi (Thanks!), I checked my activity again this morning and voila - every workout showed up. So the exercise workouts DO get moved to the activity app - however, there is a significant delay  (more than 3 to 4 hours) in the transfer of data from the Watch to the iPhone.

    Yes - Pace counts. It is a little unfair since less fit people get as much exercise (HR elevation) at a slower pace than fit people but it doesn't count in the green ring if you don't move "fast" enough. 3MPH seems to be the cut-off. An update should probably try to adjust based on weight/BMI, etc. rather than just speed/pace.

    You can't.

     

    I think I've concluded that I just won't pay any attention to the Activity app.  There are other apps that you can use to accomplish the same purpose (third party apps like Strava or Runkeeper that work on the watch), and I'll just use those and pretend the Activity app doesn't exist. 

     

    You can have the data in Health populated to other apps, too. 

     

    I'll use the Workout app for one purpose and one purpose only: monitoring my heart rate.

     

    And maybe someday, by the time they've reached the third or fourth update, Apple will decide to fix this problem.

    If you did that, you'd only be cheating yourself.

     

    If the app doesn't count as exercise what I think of as exercise, it's not functioning properly.  And redefining a bug as a feature doesn't help.

    It’s all watch OS and iOS bugs. I haven’t done any runs or rigorous activities yet and I got my exercise ring to go past completion with just really long walks. But it doesn’t always seem to calculate the same for long walks though. It’s inconsistent and since i’m walking with both my watch and phone which uses gps to calculate and work together with the watch. I must conclude that it’s both a watch and phone software bug problem.

    If I walk BRISKLY indoors in a level parking structure with an elevated heart rate, the time is recorded as exercise.The key is walking briskly 16 minute mile pace with an elevated heart rate.For me Exercise is being recorded accurately and I believe that this part of the watch works properly. It appears to me that running and walking workouts are being recorded properly provide you do it at a 16 mph pace and have elevated heart rate.

    I am also having this problem.  I open the exercise app, it records my indoor walk showing an elevated heart rate and distance completed.  However, I can not move fast enough to register my work out as an exercise within the activity application.  I feel this is a huge gap in the activity/exercise apple application.  Those who are over weight or pregnant(that's me) can not move fast enough to reach the minimum values required to register workouts as exercise.

    I have concluded that outdoor walking and getting accurate readings is hopeless. Clearly the algorithm(s) for walking are screwed  up. It appears that the sampling should be for longer chunks of time. It is impossible even walking at a brisk pace with an elevated heart rate for the watch to work properly for walking.

    I Found this thread after my wife complained that her exercise ring was not fully working.  Based on reading the responses here and looking at our workouts it really appears to be tied to heart rate.   Here is my reasoning. 

    WE went on a walk today, side by side, for a little over 40 minutes. I received 37 minutes of exercise credit but she only received 20. After comparing data in the health app and calculating target heartrates it appears that she received less credit because for much of the walk she was below the target range (122-149), while mine was 118 - 144. For a lot of the walk her heart data showed 115 to 120 bum). Note that I am using the calculation (220-age)*.7 and (220-age)*.85.  It is possible that Apple is using a different formula.

     

    IT would be interesting to hear if others complaining here see something similar. To be clear , you have to go into your heart rate data and scan through it for the  designated workout period.

    Did you or your wife use the Workout app? If you do you will get credit for the exercise regardless of your heart rate.

    Yes. She used the workout app as well as me, but did not get full credit. On her health app it shows the full time under walk+running distance and under workouts (40 minutes in both ). However, under the activity app it only gives her credit for 20 minutes of exercise. i would have expected this to be 40 minutes as well, but I am thinking that she is not getting credit due to her lower heart rate.

    IF I go into her health app and look under vitals/heart rate/show all data, and look through it I see roughly about 18 minutes or so where her heart rate exceed 120bpm.  Maybe this is just a coincidence, but will need to do more workouts to verify.  Guess it could also be a software bug.

    The exercise ring in activity app fills based on movement. Anything a brisk walk and above will fill it. You and your wife have different strides, body movement, height and weight so it will not be calculated the same, same goes for the move ring and calories burned. But the exercise rings should be close to what your wife is if you've walked the same distance and same pace.

    Thanks Keiron. We walked side by side the exact same distance and pace, so like you say I would expect it to be close. We will try the Sam thing again and see what happens.
