Q: Why SO many random DCIM Folders?  I want ONE!

I have an ipone 4s.  I have had an iPhone for over 5 years now.  Before the DCIM folder would hold 1000 pictures.  As soon as I would take another picture (ei 1001) then it would start another folder for those thousand pictures.  So by time I got into the 5000+ I had over 5 folders.  They are random (ei 851PKYZB, 851XTGOR, 914ELZYG, etc.) Last month or so when I plugged my phone into the computer to copy my photos onto my desktop I had ONE folder.  It was glorious not to have to open every folder to figure out where the newest pictures were.

Then today I plug my phone into my computer to copy pictures over and I now have a folder for every 100 pictures.  YES TONS and TONS of folders (55 folders to be exact) and no rhythm or reason to the numbering system.  Some with only 1 picture in them, as I delete a lot of pictures after transferring to my computer.  So when I wanted to find todays pictures I had to open over half of them to find my pictures.

HOW do I get it back to ONE folder?  I understand the reason there is a DCIM folder to begin with, but I really think I should be able to have 1 folder or at least have them numbered 100APPLE, 101APPLE, or something that is numeric and I know that the very last folder are the new pictures.  Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  (I have the newest iOS 8.1.2) Thanks in advance.

You are saying as if I going to migrate to Mac world. Can you just imagine that people also live in Windows world? Do not move us away from the problem, please!

To find the recently done pictures is the common task, obviously. It can be resolved user-friendly and it eve was done so. And in the recent versions of iOs they broken that.

Just an addition to the steps from T-Minator. I've just done what you suggest. My WE shows pictures, but does not allow to copy them in shif mode (search results). I was needed to do nore:

    1. Right-click on the recent photo and called 'properties'.

    2. In the appeared dialog I saw the file full path.

    3. There I got the name of the non-human readable directory. I t was "900ONROE".

    4. I opened "900ONROE" in WE and my recent picturess were there.

Amazing! So you found yet another complex workaround for what is a simple process using the right tools. And what you will get is the raw images, missing any edits you made on the phone or any of the advanced camera settings. And then I'll bet you will complain that your edits were lost.

    1. You need a 3rd party tool.

    2. You need to wait until it scans your device.

    I do not need both.

You DO NOT need a 3rd party tool. Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard is built in to every version of Windows since Windows 2000.

Do you think your message changes the final conclusion, as #1 and #2 goes with 'AND' ?

OK, so you think it is faster to manually look for images than to let the Camera and Scanner wizard find them? If so, then do it manually. But you will still lose any edits made on the phone, as you won't find the image edit files.

Are you joking? Or you really think so? If yes, my condolence to you.

When it was done before, I just open a directory and get files from the end of the list. What can be faster? Why do I need to open some other programs?

BTW, I do not edit picture files in iPhone.

Making any special assumptions about user needs/preference ia a known error of the beginners in user interface design.

Vava, there's an easier way to copy your photos using the search method instead of the 4 steps you've listed. Start by searching using the asterisk, as we've been doing. Then right-click on your most recent photo and choose "Open file location" from the menu. This will open the sub-folder containing your most recent photos where you will then be allowed to copy/paste multiple photos at a time.

Had to re-post this since my last one was reported and removed. This support community is designed in such a way that allows people to come to this thread to insult us, but when we stick up for ourselves and each other, our posts get reported. Unfortunately, we are not granted the same right to report abusive posts because of the established status system. We can't report posts until we reach level 2 (at least 150 points), so as far as I can tell, there's no way to defend ourselves against insults & attacks. I don't understand why those who come to this thread to put us down continue to come back. Why not just ignore the thread?

The Terms of Use for the site are clearly defined, your post(s) were removed for violating those terms. This is the normal result when that happens.

It was removed only because it was reported. Seems like someone can dish it out, but can't take it. I assure you there are other posts here that violate the terms as well. The only reason they still remain is because the system is designed in such a way that those being attacked in this thread aren't given the same opportunity to report it.

I think you've nailed it - your post (before deletion) was spot on but posts calling people malcontents for daring to post a genuine query remains !

I think I'll seek any future help elsewhere where people aren't so far up themselves

The system has been thus for years, if you want seniority (and the ability to report posts) you need to help others. Then they can award points to you and you will be able to report posts. In the meantime please stick to the Terms of Use
