Q: Making the jump to Macbook and exteral iTunes library.

Hi All,

After years of dedication to windows based PC's, i have finally decided to take the plunge and move to Mac!

Q: my current itunes library is on an external hard drive via usb as there is not enough space on the computer. Ideally i would like to plug this drive straight into my Macbook and continue as normal but i know its not as easy as that. How to i overcome-

1. The Macbook will likely not recognise the external USB drive as its in a windows format. How do i get around this without putting at risk the content on the drive.

2. With the above on mind, how do i set up itunes on my mac, point the location of the Itunes media folder to the external hdd and simply continue from there? I.e if i point the settings to the HDD will my library which is also in icloud somply find the tracks in the itunes folder on the Hdd without me having to simply manually select each file?

Thanks

simon

Under File > Library > Organize Library the box Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media" should be greyed out if the active media folder is using the modern layout. If you select the right media folder \iTunes\iTunes Media then close iTunes and reopen you should see the box as tickable, or, if not, you should find that turning keep organized off, then turning it back on, moves things to the correct location.

If for some reason iTunes insists on using the old layout and doesn't show the reorganize option even though the correct media folder is selected then take a look inside the media folder for a hidden file called .iTunes Preferences.plist. If you examine this with a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++ you will find a section like this:

         <key>Layout Version</key>

         <integer>1</integer>

An integer value of 1 indicates the modern layout, 0 the old one. I suppose it might be possible for the file to be locked so that iTunes cannot process a change to it.
