Jun 3, 2015 12:50 AM in response to maa94by léonie,I could share them through iCloud or when my iPhone was connected via USB to my Mac, I could drag them across. Is there any way to do a similar thing in Photos? I don't want to pay for extra iCloud space & an iPhone 4 can't use iOS 8.
You can still use Photo Stream to sync with the iPhone. But you cannot enable it selectively to download from the iPhone. It will also upload all new photos.
Have you tried to sync the photos to the iPhone with iTunes as described here?

Also, my iPhone is synced with another iTunes library, so that doesn't work either. I don't want to have to move everything off my other laptop just to add a couple of photos here & there.

You enable My Photo Stream in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud.
If you do that any photo you add to your Photos Library will be added to My Photo Stream automatically. And any Photo added on another device will download automatically.
If you want to upload photos from several Macs create a shared Photo Album. You can share photos to this album from both macs and browse the album on your iPhone.
