Q: iOS 8 Safari not working with sites using Windows Authentication (again)

A testbed of iPhones and iPads were updated to iOS 8 today. When trying to access intranet sites in our company that use Windows (IIS) Authentication, it challenges for the login and password 2 or 3 times, then nothing - just hangs.  These sites work fine on iOS 7 devices - and worked on the same devices that were upgraded.

Windows Authentication was broken in iOS 7.0 also and not fixed until a later update. Why does this keep getting broken?

It's not just about Sharepoint. Even the windows authentication doesn't work (and client side certificates), which is bigger issue for me. Mainly if you develop iOS application that needs to connect to IIS server using this type of authentication cause your customer demands it. And if this doesn't work and you can loose million $ contract then you would be also pretty frustrated.

As I said, your frustration is perhaps justified. The rest is not.

I'm getting reports of users that Upgraded Safari 8.0.2 on their Mac OS X and are reporting that Safari on the Mac is behaving better with Windows Authentication.  Anyone else with these results or Prior Mac OS X Safari Issues?  Lets hope the Fixes in 8.0.2 trickle down to the iOS Version.

    Bumping.

Has this issue been resolved as I cannot find any 2015 content about this issue anywhere, but I am having problems with windows authentication on IOS.

Our company intranet is now going to be used on ipads and logging in is hit and miss using windows authentication.

    Hi,

the issue is still there, but it behaves a bit better now in latest iOS 8.1.3. Authentication dialog didn't come so often when using NTLM.

But I did manage to get Kerberos authentication working and this one seems to be fine so far.

    See e.g. here:

There's an issue with this in Safari in OS X Yosemite too. It works occationally, but after a while (for whatever reason) it stops working and trying to access the web address hosted by Windows IIS won't work i.e. Safari won't load it – it tries but doesn't go anywhere. When this happens it always work to log out of the OS X account and then back in again. That makes Safari load the site, until it is triggered again (whatever triggers it).

My manager here at work is running Mavericks and for him it always works in Safari, so it seems to be something with Safari in Yosemite. If we could figure out what process it is that is restarted (when loggin out of the OS X account) that make it work again, one could of course manually restart just that process as a more convenient workaround than loggin out.

On iOS I guess there's no easy workaround since you can't log out or restart individual processes.

were you able to find a fix to this issue. My site is uses IIS (SharePoint 2013), SSL, NAT with windows authentication. Me too having the same issue when using Safari iOS 8 devices.

Office 365 will work becuase it uses Azure AD to authenticate. Azure AD can also be used with other web applications using IIS. ADFS does work. The issues is specifc to Window NTLM authentication.

The bug has not been fixed in iOS 8.4.1.

I think there are at least to possibilities.

    1. It's not a priority for Apple
    2. Apple is treating Windows Authentiction, NTLM, like Flash and dropping support for it in favor of newer technologies.

Either way, I wouldn't write and iOS app that depended on NTLM.

Work arounds include configuring IIS to use Azure AD authentication, using forms authentication, using ADFS authentication and using Azure AD Applicaiton Proxy.
