Jun 3, 2015 6:56 PM in response to Ethan7988by gdgmacguy,You are mistaken. The carrier on the display has NO bearing on to whom the phone is locked. The phone can be roaming.

Jun 3, 2015 6:58 PM in response to karebear5260by Charles Palenz,Try this: Go to settings, general, about. My phone is alive and has a sim card, but I turned off the cellular data and found it still tells me my network and carrier. Else, go to any ATT or verizon or Apple store and ask. Or talk with your parents since activating will not be free.

Jun 3, 2015 7:00 PM in response to karebear5260by karebear5260,I should have perhaps added that Sim card is removed and a factory reset was done.

Jun 3, 2015 7:03 PM in response to Charles Palenzby karebear5260,I don't mind paying but didn't know if apple would be able to unlock without knowing carrier. While I'd like to use it as a phone I'd be happy to use it wifi only.

Jun 3, 2015 7:13 PM in response to karebear5260by Charles Palenz,as it sets now, you can use like an iPod. To ask is free, if you wanted the phone part. But there's no reason to unlock if you do not go with the original carrier (for phone and data) when using like an iPod touch (I think is what they are now called). The wi-fi part works regardless of the carrier, so you can do email at McDonalds and anywhere you have wi-fi available.

Jun 3, 2015 7:20 PM in response to karebear5260by gail from maine,Bring up Google (or any search engine) on a computer, and in the Search Window, type in the Model number of the phone to find out what carrier it was sold under. You can find the Model number by going to Settings>General>About, then find the Model number.
Cheers,

Jun 3, 2015 7:24 PM in response to Charles Palenzby karebear5260,I have tried without a Sim card and get application error and then bought a Sim card and it doesn't recognize Sim card. Either way I can't get past language and country part of setup!
