Apart from a balance, the valid payment methods (Visa, MaterCard etc) will show on the payment details screen on your account - tap on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and log into it : Change or remove your Apple ID payment information in the iTunes Store - Apple Support
Not all debit cards seem to still be accepted (and may not be valid at all in some countries), you may get a 'declined' message if you try to add one to your account. Credit cards are more likely to be accepted (as long as it's one of the types listed on the payment details screen e.g. Visa).
