Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you did not sign in to iCloud on the iOS device. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
iCloud: Account troubleshooting - Apple Support
- iOS 5 or later:
- Tap Settings > iCloud.
- Review the iCloud settings to make sure the account is set up properly.

Jun 5, 2015 2:20 PM in response to mario49by ellenfromlake errock,Thanks for responding Mario. In the mean time I've found out that my passcode lock was on and the likely source of my problem. Never turned it on as far as I know, but perhaps this was done by the update? In any case, once switched off, all is well again.
