Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

    I contacted Apple Support and was referred to an appointment with an 'expert' at my local Apple Store. Took it up there today, and they are going to replace it under warranty\Apple Care (my unit is still under Apple Care till next year). They said it was the cloth I was using, and that I need to stop using that cloth. I told them that it was a lint free cloth as advised in the care instructions that came with the unit. She then said that not all lint free cloths are the same and some can cause this damage. I told her that I used the same cloth for my iPhone, iPads, iMac, non retina Macbook Pro, and they have no issues. She says that's because they don't have the same coating that the retina macbook pro does. Hmm..ok. so I ask why does it come off so easily then, when using a lint free cloth? Its the cloth I am using..I am told. Mmmm ok. She then says, that they will not cover it under warranty a second time as it was my fault! I said I am only following the care instructions supplied, so I believe its a manufacturing fault. I was just about the suggest that I will contact Australia Fair Trading and ask them to clarify, but she said they will replace it under warranty. Left the unit with them and expecting 7 days for the screen replacement.

    Give it a go folks...and if they won't do it, suggest that you will take it further with your local body that protects people against faulty goods.

    Hello All!

    Fortunately for me, I just received back from the service my MBPRO Retina  - Late 2014.

    As I told before, also mine retina screen, has same issues with the AR coatings.

    I have buy my MBPro on last BlackFriday, from an romanian Apple reseller , here we do not have an Apple Store.

    When I found my stains on the screen, two weeks ago, I send`it back to the service (product is still under 2 years warranty). Today I get it back, with the screen replaced, without any questions.

    Yep, even if this is happened to me, I`m still concerned about the quality of the AR coatings, and I`m still worried about the future of this screen.

    In my opinion this is a manufacturer fail, that should be solved for all the defective unit, into a service program.

    Just read on a German online magazine that new Macbook 2015 models have reflective screens. Can it be that Apple stopped applying the troubled antireflective coating to its MacBooks?

    Same problem here. Have always cleaned with microfiber and water and at this point, only the left and bottom edges are affected. Nervous about cleaning the display any further since each time I do this, the problem only worsens.IMG_0230.JPGScreen Shot 2015-06-05 at 4.48.41 PM.png

    Hi all,

    Today I tried to get all the remaining coating from the screen (MBPR13"end2013) for several hours with several chemicals I had in house:

    • sulphuric acid (pH 1 - a lot less than any oils on your fingers );
    • alcohol (70%);
    • turpentine;
    • vinegar.

    Unfortunately I was only able to get it off from the sides and some small amounts from where the actual screen begins. I even put a small amount of the above chemicals on different places on the screen (towards the center not on the sides) to soak for about 3 hours. I used some cling film to prevent them from vaporizing. It didn't had any effect at all. I also suspect to have had exact the same effect on the edges using plain water. That's how it started anyway.

    As the chemicals didn't work I tried some grade 0 steel wool on the left bottom and top corner (see photo) on the parts where the actual screen begins. It took a lot of effort to get off only a bit of the coating. I'm not confident to do this on the entire screen taking into account the pressure that needs to be applied.

    Any advise (maybe from a chemist ) would be very appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    That's the point you don't need all that. Just use water and the cloth that comes with the laptop. Eventually it will come off....

    Yes, I know, but until now that only worked for the edges on my screen. The coating on the edges goes off very easily. On the screen itself it's very difficult on mine. But that only proves more that this isn't caused by users but is very dependent on the quality of the coating on the screen. If you're lucky you get a model that has the coating on it as it should, but you could also end up with the quality similar to the edges on the one I'm using.

    I'll keep on trying to get it off completely. Hopefully I will manage it without damaging the screen.

    Mabook Pro 15" retina early 2013, same problem as all of you. Don't even know how it could be possible to have such a problem on a so expensive machine. Worst of all I can't understand why on Earth Apple doesn't reply with an official statement to this. I mean, would this be so problematic to fix our screen free of charge for a company like this? Can't make proper pictures but I will post everything on here as soon as I can, to leave my contribution to this topic. I really do hope Apple is reading and willing to fix the situation!

    Cheers from Italy!

    No, I (like all the others that are writing here) are not expecting Apple to write us something on this board. I was referring to the fact that the problem people are experiencing is so obviously a design flaw that Apple should have already made an official statement offering a free of charge replacement of said screens. Apple started to replace defective video board on other macbook pros, so I still hope they can sort out this issue aswell cheers

    P.S. I apologize for my mistakes, English is not my mothertongue

    Thought I would chime in.  Pictured below is the 3rd replacement display panel on my Late 2013 rMBP 13" (e.g. this mac has had 4 displays including the original fitted to it).  I clean with nothing but microfibre cloth and filtered water.

    I am out of warranty and was told last time at the Apple Store this would be the last time they would replace (which is not accurate considering there are statutory consumer protection provisions in Australia).  In any event I contacted Apple seeking an address to which I could write setting out my concerns and my proposed resolution.  I was transferred immediately to a department who handled my call and arranged a replacement machine.  Not just a display, but a machine.  I am not aware of laws in other jurisdictions, but certainly in Australia we have laws that protect the consumer from such scenarios.

    Apart from the last experience at the Apple Store (in which I did get a replacement panel anyway) Apple have been quite good in handling the situation.  I am sorry to hear some of you have not had the same experience.
