Feb 12, 2014 1:49 PM in response to MailQueryby jason269,★HelpfulHello, MailQuery.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would start with closing all open applications as outlined in the first article and power cycle the device. If the issue persists, the easiest way to troubleshoot this issue would be to delete the account and add it back to the iOS device. Below, I have included two additional email troubleshooting articles. The first article covers basic email troubleshooting. The second articleis usually the resolution for this issue with a Gmail account.

May 5, 2015 9:30 PM in response to jason269by vlntrg,I've had this issue since updating to iOS 8.3 with both my gmail account and my U of M alumni address, which is also a google account as of a couple years ago. I tried deleting and re-adding the U of M account (which is the one I primarily use), got the messages saying that the process couldn't be completed using SSL and saying it couldn't be completed at all, and tried adding it anyway, but of course it still couldn't get mail so I deleted it again.
I've power cycled the device, which didn't help. I filled out the unlock form and deleted the gmail account, and now it won't complete the process of re-adding it. I filled out the unlock form again and tried adding the U of M account again and it still doesn't work.
Throughout all of this, Yahoo mail works fine (but that's my secondary back-up and almost none of my contacts has that address), I can access my Google and U of M mail using the using the browser, but I don't like the Google webmail interface and I particularly hate the mobile version.
How do I get my Google-based mail accounts to work with iOS 8.3?
Thanks.
Troy

May 7, 2015 10:46 AM in response to vlntrgby torasek,We had two factor login enabled, and that is why our iphone didn't log on properly to the gmail account.
Went to this URL to revoke old app specific password, then created a new one which I used to set up the gmail account on the iphone.

May 9, 2015 8:12 AM in response to vlntrgby vlntrg,I've gone through all of these pages repeatedly and none of this helps. I still can't use SSL to add my U of M account, and if I add it anyway it can't send or receive e-mails (I've also scoured the U of M set-up help pages and tried everything they suggest). Enabling all the other outgoing servers makes no difference, and I don't have two-step verification enabled so that's not in the mix.
Also, I can't add a Google account at all. When I click on the Google logo on the Add Account page, it has me sign in, asks for access to mail, contacts etc., then when I click Accept, it briefly shows the list of various mail servers again, slides to the list of selector buttons for enabling/disabling Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes but it's all grayed out, and then it immediately slides back to the list of mail servers and I'm once again at the point of selecting Google for my mail.
Any other ideas?

May 11, 2015 9:38 AM in response to vlntrgby neilkumar,Have you had a satisfactory reply yet??? I have the EXACT same issue. Deleted gmail from phone, try and add and I go through the same process below.... so still no gmail. On Mac, it just shows an issue with server. I continually get emails saying to long in direct which I do, but there are no Google settings to allow access to Mac or Phone.

May 20, 2015 6:49 PM in response to vlntrgby Kodybrook,Celebrations! It seems to be solved. It may be a Gmail - Apple clash........... I downloaded the Gmail app for iPhone which is free and immediately all problems solved. Sent the default Mail app as far as possible to the far edges of the universe. Yay!

Jun 2, 2015 8:30 AM in response to vlntrgby alomini,As of this morning I have the same problem and I never had it before now. Tried shutting off phone and restarting, removing gmail account, will not complete setup process. Is it due to the switch of gmail to 'inbox by google"?

Jun 5, 2015 5:50 PM in response to vlntrgby abby518,I Am having the same problem and I have also tried everything. It is particularly frustrating because I reload the app and it works... For an undetermined amount of time. Then, I'll have my phone in airplane mode (on an airplane) and I will compose many messages and when I land, gmail stops working and all
my drafts are lost.
I am linking the problem to using it in airplane mode. I also used a /mail in the server section and I thought it was a fix, but it wasn't.
The Gmail app is awful, I want to use my mail app.
I will have to create an email account from someone else.
any suggestions? i already broke up with hotmail
because it doesn't keep emails past a week on my phone.

Jun 8, 2015 9:02 AM in response to MailQueryby H0uta,I started having the same problem few days ago, which I
think is related to airplane mode (have been using it alot the last few days).
At the beginning I was getting the error 'Cannot get Mail' but it would
eventually work and pull all my emails, I didn't realise it was Gmail specific until
today.I’m also linking the problem to airplane mode as I have been
using it daily for the last few days.I did the mistake and removed (deleted) the Gmail from the
phone and now am not able to add it back. I tried all the above and more with
no joy!! I can access gmail via the browser or the Gmail app (which is so bad)
for Iphone as a workaround. My biggest
problem is my contacts, Gmail contacts are my primary main contacts on the
phone, and all my phone book now showing no names, just numbers!!PLEASE This needs to be resolved ASAP!!!

Jun 8, 2015 9:05 AM in response to H0utaby alomini,Mine finally worked but it only works on 4g mode or connected to certain WiFi's.
The WiFi it worked on that same morning suddenly stopped allowing access to the gmail. But once I turned off WiFi and had a good enough connection I could add my gmail. But my work WiFi (and sometimes my home WiFi) doesn't let me check gmail anymore.
