Jun 5, 2015 8:46 AM in response to FL_Hawkeyeby lllaass,★HelpfulIf you can download a MAC OS instal;ler package (10.7 and later) y can make a bootable USB instll device using
Newer Macs come with firmware that allow booting (Internet Recovery) with blank HD.
See:
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
You can clone the existing HD to external media and then swap drives and clone it back. Or better clone it to the media you want to now install n the Mac

Jun 5, 2015 11:01 PM in response to FL_Hawkeyeby Lanny,★Helpfulthe issue i foresee is the fact that these new mac mini's are non-customizable and mine will have a cheesy 5400 rpm boot drive.
You'd be better off returning the MacMini and buying one with an internal SSD as it would be connected via PCIexpress. It would be faster than using an external USB3 SSD. Buying the cheapest one with the 5400 rpm drive is just not the way to go.
If you can't return it, then get a Thunderbolt external SSD drive in lieu of a USB3 drive.

Jun 6, 2015 3:33 AM in response to Lannyby FL_Hawkeye,thanks Lanny, I will look into the thunderbolt option. my issue with the add-on's for this mac and pretty much any other apple product is the insultingly blatant overpricing for these options. the one i'm buying has the standard 1tb hd. hence the reason for this thread. I hadn't thought about thunderbolt to ssd, mainly because I've been out of the mac world for a while, but i'm glad you brought this up. I will explore this option. of course, if it's an apple product, i'll probably have to take out a loan...
