Q: new entries revert to "new event"

Just within the last few days, Calendar has begun consistently misbehaving. I create a new event, assign it to a calendar, fill in information such as time and notes. I close the editing window, the new title displays (I'm using Month View) for just a second, and then it reverts to "New Event," and everything I've entered is lost. Oddly, when I enter all the information a second time, it always seems to stay.

As far as I know, I haven't made any changes to my OS (10.9.5) or to Calendar (7.0), neither via their settings nor any other way. FYI, I'm using iCloud to sync between the calendars on my MBPro and my iPhone (4S, running 7.1.2).

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Apple does not officially patrol or monitor these discussions. This is a peer-to-peer forum. You are very unlikely to receive an official reply from Apple here.

Instead, try contacting Apple Support, your local Genius Bar (if there is a "local" one), or sending feedback to the Calendar development team at Apple via this form, as many other posters on this thread have suggested.

This workaround works for me as well. I'm not sure when the change was made in the OS, but it is a bit inconvenient. I've also sent feedback to Apple.

This strongly appears to be an iCloud sync issue.

    My reasoning:

    • I've switched off Wi-Fi and changed the calendar selection for the event without closing the event edit dialog (the event title holds).
    • I've also confirmed that I can type in an event title and select different Google calendars, and the title name will still hold.

Thus, there is apparently a problem when Calendar tries to sync the event to iCloud. The metadata for the event title is not being saved correctly to iCloud when the event's calendar is changed without closing the dialog to "save" the event first.

All we can do is use the workaround until the issue is repaired (if Apple does decide to repair it), or else upgrade to Yosemite.

i personally don't think apple will be putting much attention to this problem since it's an Issue with an older release. I believe they are focused on Yosemite issues and not an older release.  we eventually need to face the upgrade. My resistance is that I did uograde early on and had problems so bad that I had to buy another (used) mac to solve them - Yosemite re-partitions the hard drive so there is no going back if you have problems. So I'm in no hurry to go through that again.  The workarounds while inconvenient are better than the chaos I endured with Yosemite last fall. I'm going to hold off with Yosemite for at least another 6 mos and in the meantime I hope apple will address this problem but not holding my breath.

Same thing happening with me ... The fix suggested does work for me (but it's a pain) ... If you want to create a new event that isn't default calendar.

    1) Create New Event,

    2) Before entering information, choose the desired calendar

    3) Press return before entering other information (to save it)

    4) Go back into event and enter any event information, and press return to save.

You are not going to like this:

I have just had confirmation from Apple Tech that Apple can't/won't fix this problem. The only thing we can do is to upgrade to Yosemite which will fix the issue. This is costing our business a great deal as we have to upgrade other software to be compatible with Yosemite.

Hang your head in shame Apple and expect my bill. I shall be informing trading standards and the media.

My work around: When I re-enter the entry, it saves the new entry and doesn't go back to 'new event'.

In other words, enter every entry twice and it sticks. Inconvenient but no need to upgrade to Yosemite.

That was the first workaround I came up with, GerbenD, but I think my trick about simply waiting to change calendars until you've closed the editing box -- and then changing calendars via the contextual menu -- is a good deal simpler and more elegant, since you don't have to re-open the box or re-enter any information. Is that solution not working for you?

Say, if that workaround -- we might call it the "hueyo trick" for short -- isn't working for anybody here, it would be helpful if you'd put it on record, as well as any further info that might help us all figure out the best ways to deal with this problem, since it doesn't appear to be going away.

And as for me, I'm gonna upgrade to Yosemite ASAP. Screw this crap.

Hi Hueyo, I misunderstood your first work around, but I just tried it again and yes, it works better.

It's not about a workaround. Yes, you can "jiggle" it to stick doing a few different things. The point is we shouldn't have to do a workaround, but Apple is obviously not going to do anything about it.

For me it is all about a workaround. I have no external HD free at the moment, so an upgrade to Yosemite, as safe as it might seem is not an option.

What Apple does or doesn't do is not within my control, so I am not going be concerned about Apple.

I bought my first Mac 20 years ago (Classic II) and it was revolutionary compared to the then more widely accepted Windows PC.

Even if I would be annoyed about the ongoing issue, I couldn't come up with an alternative that so gracefully integrates hardware and software. It's just a bigger business now, so they might take decisions that are in their interest and not that of some consumers. Overall, their service has been absolutely great.

Just to dispell a rumor I see on this board:

Yosemite is NOT the answer to this problem.   I have Yosemite.  I have the same problem as all of you.

It is a monster PITA.    I've made appointments only to return a day later and try to piece together emails to see who I'm meeting and when.

    The workaround seems to help.

Ouch! That is not good news... except perhaps in the sense that Apple can't simply ignore the problem. If upgrading isn't a solution, then they're just going to have to fix it... fingers crossed.

Just upgraded a company over the weekend with 6 iMacs sharing 6 iCloud Calendars from Mountain Lion to Yosemite 10.10.3, and New Event problem is happening with ALL computers! Will try hueyo's work-around and see if that helps. Wish I had seen this thread first!

So your client didn't have the problem until you upgraded them to Yosemite?? THAT'S a new wrinkle.

Seems to me, Greg, you're in a very good position to call up Apple Support and raise ****.

(Oh, I didn't realize Apple had the advanced technology to turn my H E double hockey sticks into asterisks. Wish they'd put that brainpower to work on OUR little problem.)
