Q: ipod plays fine but itunes says ipod is corrupted

I have 6 files with maybe 10 hours of music on my 40GB ipod classic (4th gen.).  The ipod seems to work normally.  When I plug it into the mac, itunes says the ipod is corrupted, and won't load it.  I've tried a different cable, restarted it, and tried disk utility--which failed.  (My 5th gen. Classic works fine with itunes.)

Since these files will play, is it possible to move them onto the computer without using itunes?

Thanks.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. The manual method listed at the end should work to recover the files. You should maintain copies of all your media in your iTunes library and back it up, so that restoring a device should it become necessary doesn't present any problems.

I guess you mean the manual method in the iLounge article?  I cannot get the iPod to connect, without iTunes saying "device is corrupted", even though I've checked the box that says iPod is NOT supposed to sync with iTunes.

BTW, I had read through, and tried, many of the software options in your "Recover....." article, prior to asking for help here.  Same problem with all of them (at least the free ones), as above.  Almost looks like l need to transfer my files to a PC, in order to not awaken iTunes, then transfer them back????

    Thanks for your response!

Press and hold down shift as you launch iTunes so you get the option to choose or create a library. Leave the dialog box on screen, put your device into disk mode and connect it. You should be able to explore the device via Windows Explorer or Finder. And yes, you should always have all your media files on your computer. If you had them on the computer now the message would be less of a concern.

BTW See also Corrupt iPod classic. Hopefully the reason iTunes thinks the device might be corrupted isn't indicative of a deeper problem.

I got to the "Choose or create library" dialog box (by holding down the option key ) and left it on screen, without clicking either box.  Then put iPod into disk mode and connected it.  Nothing happened on screen.  Clicked on Finder and got a box labeled All My Files.  60 some files seen under "Music" but none labeled like ipod files, though some were obviously desktop music files.  Not sure how to check the others to see if any are the ipod files?

    Progress?

    Thanks again.

Scroll about half way down http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/P1/ where it tells you how to display the hidden files and folders on your device and copy them to your computer.

I had seen the info you reference, i.e. using Terminal.  The problem is earlier in the tutorial.  I've got "prevent sync" checked in iTunes.  I've got the iPod in disk mode, then connected.  However, I can't/don't see the iPod with Finder.  So I can't click on it and continue with the tutorial.

BTW, in case it helps:  When running disk utility on the iPod, the error message I get is "Invalid sibling link".

    Thanks.

I'm afraid my Mac experience is somewhat limited. You could try starting the Mac with the iPod already connected in disk mode to see if that works, and if you have one try an alternate cable just in case.

No dice:  Already tried another cable and other option didn't work.  Since several of the free software programs that sound like they'd work for my problem are for PCs only, I think I'll try on a friend's  PC and see how it goes.  Will let you know.  Thanks again for the effort!

Found a PC without iTunes loaded.  Hooked up my iPod and got a window saying it wanted to format the ipod.  I declined, presuming that would just make matters worse?  :-)

We tried to find another way to access the ipod HD on the PC but neither of us know much about them, and couldn't.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Hi. I am having same problem. For weeks, when I tried to synch my ipod (4th gen) on my PC with Itunes I kept getting message that said, "Your ipod cannot be found." Now I got the "corruption" message.

And by the way, I am trying to do just the opposite: synch from the computer to the ipod.

In order to try what you are saying, could you tell me how to go into "disk mode"?

iPods are generally shipped formatted as FAT32 for Windows. OS X will work with them in this format, but it it restores the iPod it will format as HFS+ which Windows cannot read, which is why the format was offered. This could well be a good step to take, as long as there isn't any data on the device that you're trying to recover.

It's been a while so you've forgotten  :-)  but yes, I am trying to recover 3 files.

What's so hard for me to understand, though it may make sense to you, is that the files will play just fine through ear phones, but I can't get to them on the computer!

    Thanks.
