Jun 7, 2015 8:36 AM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby Nans-Sgp,I Had the same issue today. Followed RJM's instructions and it worked!
- Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
- Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.
All seems well now, but very strange.

Jun 7, 2015 2:01 PM in response to Nans-Sgpby gail from maine,Just so you know, the toggling of the "silent button" is anecdotal. A simple reset (the second part), is the actual fix. BTW - on a Reset, the Apple logo may take up to 30 seconds to appear. It is important to hold both buttons down until it does.
Cheers,

Jun 15, 2015 7:37 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby Jtagliere,Tried this a couple times, and it did work, but definitely had to hold Home & Sleep buttons for the full 15-20 seconds. THANK YOU! Why does this happen, does anyone know.
-
Jun 15, 2015 8:01 AM in response to Jtagliereby gail from maine,Same reason that you have to reboot a computer sometimes. It's an electronic device with lots of little 0's and 1's - sometimes it gets "confused"....

Jun 25, 2015 10:45 PM in response to RJMby m.nihit,This helped me too .. but y this happens?anyidea?
-
Jun 26, 2015 10:38 AM in response to m.nihitby gail from maine,See the post two above yours for "why this happens". It's an electronic computer with millions of off and on switches that are the code. Electrical things can happen that cause one or more of those switches to do the opposite. When that happens, whether on a computer or an iOS device, you need to reboot/reset.
And again, the "Silent Switch" part of this solution is totally anecdotal. The Reset itself is what is fixing the issue.
Cheers,

Jun 29, 2015 4:59 AM in response to khyberdogby geekywizforyou,my iPhone 5 stopped working it died. didn't shut it off. was fully charged. and my top button to turn it off and on doesn't work. hasn't for a few years. so is there another way to turn it on? or will i have to go to a apple store or something?
-
Jun 29, 2015 1:57 PM in response to geekywizforyouby gail from maine,You can put it into Recovery mode, except you will have to figure out how to turn it off:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Better to take it into the Apple Store and get that button fixed. It is a pretty critical part of the device....
