Jun 7, 2015 8:40 AM in response to Ian R. Brownby Ed1941,Ian,
I tried to download from https://app.box.com/s/tc7hfpryamd3n0htdr9f but wasn't able to update FCE. The download went OK, I got the installer and did all it asked...but when I finished and went to "About Final Cut Express" I still had 4.0. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Jun 7, 2015 1:29 PM in response to Ed1941by Ian R. Brown,Sorry but I've not used the update myself . . . I've just heard claims from others that it worked.
Do you shoot AVCHD because that is all the 4.0.1 update is for?
If you are shooting AVCHD or any other "modern" format you will probably be better off using iMovie (free) or FCP X which are designed for such formats and optimised for Yosemite.

I don't know what I shoot. I'm between an old iPhone, a new iPhone, an old point-and-shoot Canon, a new Panasonic camera and an old Flip cam. I've had all kinds of problems with formats for years. Spend much of my time using QuickTime to convert formats. I think I'll just give up and pop for the new Final Cut Pro.
Thanks for the advice.

Jun 8, 2015 12:07 AM in response to Ed1941by Ian R. Brown,I would advise you to try iMovie first.
The "new" Final Cut Pro X is based on iMovie and has often been described as "iMovie on steroids".
Many people consider that as it's free, iMovie can't be much good . . . and they are completely wrong.
It is a a very competent editing app and many editors using FCP X would be better off using iMovie . . . for most people FCP X is overkill.
However, be warned that both apps are radically different from FCE and will require a little re-learning.

Jun 8, 2015 12:16 AM in response to Ian R. Brownby Ian R. Brown,All your video, from the various sources you mention, should work straight off in iMovie/FCP X . . . no need for QuickTime any more.

Two questions. Just checking when you say "All your video, from the various sources you mention, should work straight off in iMovie/FCP X" Do you mean iMovie as it come loaded onto my computer will open all the formats I've used in the past without conversion.
Second, can you have multiple audio tracks in iMovie? Sometimes I use 4 or 5 tracks in FCE?

Jun 8, 2015 1:11 PM in response to Ed1941by Ian R. Brown,iMovie should be able to use all your formats without conversion.
I believe you can use multiple audio tracks.
If you want my cloud download link to the 30 minute iMovie tutorials email me as mentioned earlier.

Jun 9, 2015 9:28 AM in response to Ian R. Brownby Ed1941,Is there a procedure I canI use to get my old edited FCE sequences into iMovie? I read somewhere that I can't because the two apps are not compatible.

Jun 9, 2015 10:40 AM in response to Ed1941by Ian R. Brown,You can import FCE videos that have been exported.
So just take a video made in FCE and put it into iMovie.
You will be able to cut it up and add things but you won't be able to readjust things like transitions or stretch out the clips a bit more.
