Q: 2006 iMac G5 PowerPC Chip Yosemite Upgrade

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my iMac G5 2006 PowerPC model to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite. Before anyone posts that it cannot be done, I am aware that Apple does not support it past OS X 10.6.8 Leopard. I am looking to by pass the restricting from Apple by using third party software I just don't know where exactly to look, if someone could point me into the right direction that would be grateful.

Accessable Hardware:

2009 MacBook Pro, 15.4", 2.53GHz intel core 2 duo, 10.10.2 Yosemite

2007 MacBook, 13", 2.0GHz intel core duo, 10.10.2 Yosemite

2014 iMac, 27", 3.6GHz intel core i7, OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite

I am pretty well equipped but I want by daughter to have the latest software on the iMac that I am repairing for her, I would buy her a supported one but she is young and I don't want her to break a 2 thousand dollar computer. I know how I was when I was a kid and if she anything like me then it would be pretty bad! Thanks in advance and I know I shouldn't be asking this in the official support community but this has been pretty useful in the past and I just want some help.

The G5 Mac used the older PowerPC CPU.  It cannot run any version of OS X after Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8.  There is no known way to "hack" around this limitation other than taking out its guts and replacing them with a newer Mac Mini!

Your newer Macs with Intel CPU's from 2009 and of course 2014 can run Yosemite; I am not sure about the 2007 model.

Thanks, I really don't want to gut it, lol. I was surprised that my 2007 MacBook got the Yosemite upgrade honestly.

I loved my iMac G5 until it died for the last time!  I replaced it in August, 2011 with the current Mac Mini for that time and have been happy ever since, with the possible exception of PowerPC applications that do not run natively in Lion or thereafter due to the lack of Rosetta in OS X from Lion and thereafter!

Your iMac G5 is probably replete with PowerPC apps!

    Faith,

You have a possible oxymoron when you say "2006 iMac PowerPC G5.' By 2006, the G5s were replaced with Intel iMacs. And you say it is running 10.6; as Michael says you cant do that on a G5.

Just to make sure, what does "About this Mac.." show for "processor?"

An old Intel iMac running 10.6.8 can still do a lot of work. A G5 iMac is rather limited.

I must be doing something wrong. I had posted a reply to your Feb 19, 2015 post, I saw it posted here, I received some sort of reply via email, but I don't see it here.

I am logged in as "marc208". Is this area only for developers or something? Do I need to do something to see my post? How do I reply to you?

Should I start a new thread?

The Moderators must have deleted your message due to its violating their Rules.  Usually, though, you would receive an email indicating they had taken this action; which must be the "some sort of reply" you indicate.  You should recheck the reply, so that you do not violate the rules again.

You can repost here or start a new thread, which is more likely to be read by more readers.  This is a user forum and is not limited to developers.

I found the question you originally posted: Seems OK to me!

I had the same question and you seem to be addressing it:

I want to upgrade to Yosemite. My iMac was built in October 2006. My processor is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I am currently running OS X 10.6.8.

    Can I do it?

I think that iMac is too old to upgrade to Yosemite.  Why do you want to upgrade?
