Q: Grayed Songs

I know there are several posts on grayed songs already. This is not the same thing.

Here are the facts:

  • I'm using iTunes version 12.1.2.27 on OS X Yosemite.
  • Several albums are grayed out in my iTunes library on Mac.
  • The same songs are just fine in my iPhone library.
  • I use iTunes Match. I've done the whole turn-off-Match-and-turn-it-on-again bit. It doesn't help.
  • All affected songs were purchased from iTunes directly.
  • All songs have been downloaded from the cloud.
  • I can play each song individually by double-clicking on it, but once it finishes, it won't move on to the next song. I cannot skip to the next song using my keyboard or by clocking on "next" button in iTunes.
  • I've unauthorized and reauthorized my Mac.
  • I haven't used iTunes in probably a month or so, but last time I used it I did not have this problem; this is a relatively new issue.

Ideas?

    Hi libohound,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the music is in iTunes and will play but not advance to the next song because it is grayed out. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

Songs containing DRM might appear grayed out.

Thank you for the reply, Mario.

I did find the article you provided and tried the steps listed before I posted my question, but it did not resolve the problem. I've tried to deauthorize and reauthorize on multiple machines to no avail.

The songs are still available and play just fine on my iPhone and iPad, but my Mac/PC will only play the grayed songs if I double-click on them individually. Once the song finishes, it will not automatically go to the next song without me double-clicking on it. I also cannot download them from iCloud on my Mac/PC, but can on my iOS devices. It appears that every song affected was purchased directly from iTunes. Any other ideas?

I suspect you've accidentally unchecked the songs. If all items in the current view are unchecked single tracks will play and then playback stops. In the Songs view CMD-click any empty checkbox, or CMD-click a ticked box twice.

    Ding ding ding!

    You're absolutely right, tt2...

Somehow along the way I unchecked a majority of my library (who knows?). I rechecked everything and it works like a charm. Thank you so much for your help.
