    I FOUND THE FIX.

Go on your iPhone.  Settings> Messages > Text Message Forwarding >  .... Turn it OFF.  Exit settings.  Re-Enter Settings> Messages > Text Message Forwarding >.... Turn it ON.  (You must have iMessage open on your mac)  It will say that it needs an access code from your mac.  You should see a pop-up in iMessage with a code.  Enter that code into your iPhone.  Close Settings.  Close iMessage on Mac.  Restart iMessage on Mac... and voila!

    Hope that helps.

    My problem was twofold:

    1. For some reason my phone number was not listed in Messages or FaceTime account preferences on my Mac.  I fixed this with the troubleshooting steps here: iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support

    2.  Then, I still found that I could not send text messages from my Mac via my iPhone to friends who are not registered with iMessage (particularly people without Apple phones).  I fixed that with the solution posted by Apple Advocate above.

I fixed it by confirming on my iPhone that message forwarding to my Macbook Pro was enabled.  Worked perfectly.

This is the fix! It worked for me also. What a relief!

However, I'll add as a note, that when I disabled and reenabled text message forwarding I was supposed to get a code in imessage but it didn't appear. After a hard restart of both my mac and the iphone then the code did appear and this fixed my problem.

As a side note, I was having the exact same problem on my apple watch and this seems to have fixed it somehow also.

Add me to the list of Non-working Message on a macbook people.

I've been working on it with a senior apple person, she's sent info to engineers who seem to think its a router issue (??) and said something about the security certs not making it through the router (again, ?). I could have mis-phrased that, so don't jump on me lol.

So far I have tried the basic Pram reset, deleting files listed earlier, did a complete erase and reinstall of Yosemite, did a complete Zero erase and install of snow leopard from the DVD, upgraded to Mavericks where I am currently. I've signed in and out of accounts, checked my Apple ID via the webpage (all verified). I've done safe boot and disk repair.

My specific issue is my messages are not going out or coming in, I get the Red Highlighted Name and the "they are not a registered iMessage user". If I send to myself I get the ! Not Delivered.

I do not have an iPhone, but my messages on my iPad works perfectly. (and it has always worked perfectly on my macbook until a few weeks ago). FaceTime works, as does my internet and mail etc.

    I'll keep updating here

    Humm,

iMessages logs in to the iMessages servers on port 443.

It gets info back about the Contacts on port 5223 (somewhat like a jabber server but not actually one)

If your Firewall is On then port 5223 will be opened for Jabber (Google and Facebook chat amongst others).

Your router will always have port 443 open (You can't login in here to post without it).

It does seem that this issues is causing Apple some headaches to fix.

Add me to the list of frustrated users. I have a MBP-r, iPhone 6, iPad Mini 2, a watch, all using a relatively new Time Capsule. Everything was working in harmony until about 2 weeks ago when the MBP randomly stopped sending/receiving iMessages. However, regular SMS's never stopped working, which baffles me. So, when an Android friend sends me a text, it pops up on all of my devices, including the MBP. But, when an iPhone friend texts me, it only pops up on the iPhone/iPad/Watch.

I've tried pretty much everything discussed on this thread and elsewhere. I did a full format and clean install of Yosemite yesterday, and did not use Time Machine or any system restore feature, and that did not yield any improvement. I'm waiting to hear back from a senior apple tech support guy, but based on what I'm reading here, I'm not optimistic.

Here's to hoping Apple is tracking on this issue.

    HI,

Whilst the iMessages and Text options are both based on the Apple ID the iMessages side requires the app can login  fully to the iMessages servers.

The Text Forwarding from the iPhone of SMS messages only requires the iPhone can get SMS Messages, is using the same Apple ID and is on the same network.

(I.e. the two systems are separate from each other but are linked via the Apple ID to link them but need the iPhone to be connected to the carrier)

Any issue with the iMessages servers and you lose them whilst you may still maintain SMS abilities.

As I have said before, at the OS X 10.8.2 update Messages 7.0.1 (as it was updated to in this update) then needed the Mac's Serial Number to be present and this was used to create a unique identifier called the Auth Token based on the Apple ID in use.

At this point if the Serial Number was not present a pop up appeared telling your to contact Apple Support and a code number for your error.

Now we appear to have related but silent failures (It looks logged in but will not send).

These seem to fall into two groups:-

    1) the Contacts turning red and getting the messages that they "Are Not Registered with iMessages" ( A bit like not getting your Buddy list on other services)

    2) the iMessage appearing to be sent but instantly getting the "Not Delivered" error alert.

Some checks have helped some people:-

Date and Time settings in both Mac and Router as the login and iMessages are Time Stamped.

Check the AppleGothic font is Active, not duplicated and Validated (File Menu in the Font Boot app).

Checking DNS settings in System Preferences > Network (Listing the router's IP is not always good enough)

A PRAM/NVRAM reset has been known to help some (Restart the computer holding down ALT+CMD+P+R keys until you have heard three Start up bongs then let the start up continue.

A Safe Mode boot have worked for some.

Both these reset some things you can't reset other ways.

Deleting the Auth Token and restarting the app can work but is in the rare category.

Deleting the com.apple.imessages.bag.plist  (the listing the servers) and the IDS ****.madrid.plist  that list the Apple ID and the alternatives can help.

You have to re-enter the Apple ID if you delete the second one.

Apple do seem to be working on this.

However that means finding the cause and not resolving the symptoms that seemed to happen earlier on when Level 2 support people were resetting the iMessages servers regarding the Apple ID used by the Mac.

It tends to get bumped to the Engineers and anything to resolve the issue tends to be taking a back seat.

    Any update here?

I have this problem (red contact) on my Mac Pro. My iphone, iPad and laptop are all working perfectly.

I have even re-installed the OS from scratch to no avail.

I have tried every suggestion here.

    Hi,

    No specific update.

You might be able to contact Apple Support and say you have an ID issue (free to fix) with your Apple ID and it's use with iMessages.

You have to ask to speak to a Level 2 person.

They used to check the iMessages server and your Apple ID from the Mac use on it and unblock it if it were blocked.

Nowadays they seem to involve Engineers and want all sorts of test info.

There is no such setting -- Text Message Forwarding-- on the iPhone 6 plus. Anyone found a solution for the 6+?

Also, Ralph, I have been reading your hundreds of posts on this subject on several different threads. None of them have worked for anyone. You have just been leading people on a wild goose chase, apparently in an attempt to increase your point level. Please refrain and let some people who might really solve this into the thread.

    FIXED IT!

I just experienced the same exact problem on my macbook about 30 min ago

I don't exactly know which one of these things fixed it but this is what I did:

    (On my iPhone 6)

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > *turned it off for my macbook pro

    (On Macbook Pro)

    > Messages App

    > On the top right of the screen I clicked "Messages" in bold font between the Apple logo and the File tab

    > Quit Messages

    > *when I clicked the messages app again it brought up the Messages setup window and I just had to login to my apple ID account and it enabled iMessages again, I even got a pop-up on my phone saying iMessages is being used on a new macbook pro.

    > *sent a "hi" and it was blue and said it was delivered!

    (Back on iPhone 6)

    > *I then re-enabled Text Message Forwarding for my macbook, made me enter in a code that appeared on my laptop screen and the "hi" was synced to my phone now!

Oops, just realized people posted the same solution ahead of me, probably should have read those before experimenting on my own. I even made this account to post this

This seemed to work for me, I was trying to get a message to a particular person and they have an iPhone so it should have worked previously. (Worked okay from iPhone 5 and iPad Air 2 to them).  I'm not getting their name in red now so that's a start.

Still doesn't explain why the problem seemed to be completely random in who it would text to but hey, at least this is a fix!

    Thanks very much.

Have later added this info that helped me out so the next person reading it doesn't have to trawl through a load of answers

On your iPhone, go to Settings/Messages/Text Message Forwarding and turn the switch ON for your Mac.  A six digit code appears on your Mac, enter that on your phone.

Mine was working fine for the past 3 years until I wiped my drive the other day and re-installed Yosemite, and then it didn't work. But your solution is what fixed mine. Hopefully it will remain fixed.
