It does what Apple Music doesn't, stores your personal music library on the web.

The promotional page on their website says that my entire library is in iCloud and what they don't have they upload from the songs I import into iTunes.

Two contradicting questions from the  Music page...

How does Apple Music know what songs are in my personal library?

With an Apple Music membership, your entire library lives in iCloud. We compare every track in your collection to the Apple Music library to see if we have a copy. If we do, you can automatically listen to it straight from the cloud. If you have music that’s not in our catalog, we upload those songs from iTunes on your Mac or PC. It’s all in iCloud, so it won’t take up any space on your devices.

Does Apple Music work with iTunes Match?

Yes. Apple Music and iTunes Match are independent but complementary.   <<< ?!?!?!?!?!

I too found this to be confusing. I am very interested to know what iTunes Match does that the new Apple music will not do. I wonder if there is anyway to get this cleared up?

This is still not clear! Is it the same, different or do you need both?

I've been looking into this as well, apparently there are some exclusions to Apple Music that won't be stored in iCloud - according to the Verge at least. Also, it will not do the Matching and subsequent downloading of iTunes Store quality tracks into your library.

I read that Apple MUSIC uploads of music that can't be matched will count against iCloud storage while iTunes Match does not. This is second hand and may be complete nonsense, but I'm passing it along. Maybe someone can confirm or debunk.

I can confirm that iTunes Match does not count against iCloud storage.

That I knew (sorry I wasn't clear). It's the assertion that Apple MUSIC uploads count against iCloud storage if you don't have Match that I wonder about.

    Thanks

No idea, why not wait until Apple Music is available, then you'll know.

Curiosity! Planning! I'm into Apple with regular payments for Match and iCloud already. I'm considering adding MUSIC, and wondering if I should then drop Match.

Of course I'll find out if I wait.

I understand that Apple MUSIC includes:

    • The music streaming service: listen whatever and whenever you want from Apple Music library (similar to Spotify and others: over 30 million songs – not exactly every song available in iTunes store, a lot of music though)
    • Unlimited skipping
    • Matching of your music library in the cloud with iTunes (like iTunes Match – songs not available in itunes will be uploaded)
    • Beat 1 curated radio (this is freely available to everyone)
    • Various other genre radio stations
    • Social music/artist related stuff

    iTunes Match includes:

    • the matching of your library with iTunes
    • ad free iTunes Radio stations

Basically Apple MUSIC includes everything Apple has to offer about music, iTunes Match only two services. Of course Apple MUSIC is more expensive. If you don’t need all the streaming stuff and you need only your music library in the cloud, then go with iTunes Match. That’s the reason why the keep both subscriptions.

The word “complementary” as stated on the Apple FAQ page is in my opinion confusing: paying for both services doesn’t complement anything. It’s redundant. That’s what I figured out.

On June 22nd my iTunes Match subscription will expire. I’m interested in Apple MUSIC. I will stop paying iTunes Match, wait one week and activate Apple MUSIC. I'm just wondering if I will have to upload all my library again. Hope no: that would be annoying.

maybe they should merge itunes match with apple music to less confuse to consumers

apple music plan 1: full serivces including match, upload, streaming, radio...

apple music plan 2: match, upload, radio (this equals to itunes match)

apple music plan 3: streaming radio only

    apple music plan 4: .....
