One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & trash/rebuild cache files
Reboot, test again.

Jun 7, 2015 12:12 PM in response to BDAquaby shog1969,Can't get it to boot up in safe mode either, it goes as far as the grey screen with apple logo but no moving gear showing, just grey screen with logo and then the fans start to speed up after a couple of mins. Reset SMU and have tried PRAM reset but can't get that to work either

Jun 8, 2015 2:24 PM in response to shog1969by rccharles,Seems odd that it would do the harddware test then not boot. Did you do the memory test? Start pulling out what harddware components you can. Could be hung on some hardware device.
can you get into open firmware?
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime.
Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

Jun 8, 2015 9:37 PM in response to shog1969by kaz-k,Did you change the PRAM backup battery? It's worth trying.
-
Jun 9, 2015 10:07 AM in response to kaz-kby shog1969,Swapped out the battery and still no luck, though sitting at the machine just now and it looks like it's going to boot into safe mode hopefully! Got the rotating gear and a blue screen just taking a long time to boot! 5 mins

Jun 9, 2015 11:21 AM in response to shog1969by BDAqua,Have you blown the dust out lately?
How long will it run in Safe Mode?
-
Jun 9, 2015 12:33 PM in response to BDAquaby shog1969,Ran in safe mode for around 40 mins. Now will either not boot up or it goes as far as the login in safe mode and the hangs and needs restarted and then it wont go into safe mode until its sat for about 30 mins. Temperature problems? Not much dust inside the case.
-
Jun 9, 2015 12:49 PM in response to shog1969by BDAqua,It sure sounds like temperature problems, likely the thermal past on the CPUs need replacing.
-
Jun 9, 2015 1:45 PM in response to BDAquaby shog1969,Been switched off for an hour and now wont boot in safe mode
-
Jun 9, 2015 1:58 PM in response to shog1969by BDAqua,Hmmmm, if you ever do get it started in Safe Mode, try System Preferences>Energy Saver>Options tab>Processor Performance>Reduced.
Then see if yo can get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
