Q: Why does GarageBand 10.0.3 keep crashing?

I just bought and downloaded GarageBand but every time I open it, it crashes. It doesn't even let me do anything, not even move the mouse before it crashes. I've tried restarting my Macbook (a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that is more than capable of handling the program) and reinstalling it but nothing helped. I don't know whats wrong? Do you think its my Mac or the app?

Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Have you tried to reinstall it? The download may have been incomplete.  Move GarageBAnd to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), then download again from the Purchases page of the Mac App Store.

I see you did that already.

Do you have any older audio interface drivers installed? Audio Units, VST plug-ins?  GarageBand only works with 64-bit plug-ins.

I have reinstalled it but that didn't help.

I just got this Macbook Pro a few days ago and being a long time Windows user, I'm very new to Yosemite. I'm not sure how to check if I have older audio interfaces installed or whether I have 64-bit plug-ins.

. I'm not sure how to check if I have older audio interfaces installed or whether I have 64-bit plug-ins.

If the Mac is new and you did not install any music software besides GarageBand then you probably do not have additional plug-ins.

Try to log in from the Guest user account and check, if GarageBAnd is working, when you are using a different account.

    Does it?

I can't access anything in the guest account besides Safari until I turn off FireVault but it won't let me turn off FireVault until its done encrypting. It still has 8 hours left. Also, my Mac isn't new new. I bought it used (as I mentioned before, its a mid-2012). Its just new to me. Is there anything else I can do or should I just wait until its done encrypting?

FileVault may be causing this trouble.

Wait until File Vault has done its job before you test GarageBand again.  Applications that create packages (iPhoto, Photos, Aperture, Logic) do not work well with File Vault active. I have never tested this with File Vault enabled, since i do not use it, but it may well be the reason. I would not use it anyway. File Vault will slow down the access to your files, and that may be problematic for real time recording of music.

Okay. So I've discovered that I'm running on 64-bit plug-ins, or so says the computer in Terminal. I've turned FireVault off but GarageBand still crashes. I hope that its just the app and not my Macbook.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I have also used it under the guest accounts. It works perfect from there! Why doesn't it work in my account?

That is an important clue.  Something is different in your user account from the Guest account.

Did you have an older GarageBand version previously installed and have older projects on your Mac?

Then try to hold down the alt/options key while launching GarageBand. This way it will only show the main menu bar and not try to open an older project.  Go to the File menu and click new.  Can you get GarageBand to open this way?

    Screen Shot.png

If not, remove all traces of GarageBand from your User Library.

    • Delete the folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/
    • Delete anything with com.apple.garageband in its name from ~/Library/Preferences/

Your user library may still be hidden.

To reveal the hidden User Library:

    • Bring the Finder forward by clicking on the Desktop or the Finder icon in the Dock.
    • Select your user/home folder (with the house icon in the Finder sidebar)
    • With that Finder window as the front window, press the key combination ⌘J to bring up the View options.
    • In the View options panel enable ’Show Library Folder’. That will make your user library folder visible in your Home folder.
    • Open your Home folder, then the Library folder, then Containers.
    • Move the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/ to your desktop. Move the entire folder, not just the contents.
    • Then open the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove anything with com.apple.garageband in its name from ~/Library/Preferences/

Now restart the Mac and try again.  If all is well, delete the folder from the Desktop.

If removing the Preferences and a creating a new GarageBand project does not help, make an inventory of your installed software.

EtreCheck can help with that. It will scan your Mac and list the installed non-standard extensions: See this help page:   http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck_story

You can download EtreCheck fro free from here:

    http://www.etresoft.com/

When you run it, look primarily at the software that is listed in the sections with User in the name,  User Launch Agents:, User Login Items: or similar, since only your own account is giving problems.  Are there any items, that you installed yourself and are not standard and not run from the guest account?

This worked. I've been playing around with it and it hasn't crashed yet. The problem before was that my sister used it first and when she told me it crashed, I tried to mess with it but it wouldn't come up with the new project menu. It would only let me access the saved project. Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you for this post.  I have a newer IMac (2015) and have never been able to use Garageband without it crashing on me after one attempt at doing even a simple voice recording. I tried your suggestions and ended having to reveal the hidden User Library and then removing the com.apple.garageband folders as you described. I restarted my computer and opened Garageband.  I've tried Garageband a couple times now and it seems to be working as it should.  We'll see.  But I wanted to thank you for posting this.
