Q: I have the Mavericks system currently but have been thinking of upgrading to Yosemite.  I had a problem going from M-Lion when my download file lost all my previous photos and now only has 42 windows to trap downloads.  Are there similar issues with Yo?

I am thinking of upgrading to Yosemite before the next fall upgrade from Apple.  I encountered at least one issue in the M-Lion to Mav upgrade when all my downloads were reduced to only the allowable 42 windows in the M-download file.  I had over a 100 photos that were shoved onto the main disc that I now have to laboriously search to find.  I don't know if this was a glitch or part of the redesign of Mavericks.  Anyway, I need to know what other problems exist in Yosemite like this one that will cause a big problem.  I do not have a lot of accessory programs on my computer and primarily use it for internet usage, games, numbers and pages.  All input from users will be greatly appreciated.  At this time I am not aware if the new El Capitan version due in the fall can be downloaded on my Mac--I have a 2008 version Mac.  If someone hs ny info on this update and its applicability, I would appreciate the news.  Thank you in advance.

There are all kinds of possible issues one can face when updating to a new OS.  Just look through this forum.  You may not have any.  Everyone is different.  Mavericks is very solid so not sure why you had any issues with that one.  ALWAYS have a backup like Time Machine before doing anything so in case you have issues that cannot be resolved you can return back when all was OK.

Update your iPhoto app to iPhoto 9.6.1 at the App Store before you upgrade to Yosemite.   Read this User Tip: Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

The new Photos app is lacking a lot of iPhoto's capabilities and you may want to continue using iPhoto until Photos has been updated several times.  This User Tip shows the differences between the twoPhotos 1.5 vs iPhoto 9.6.1:  Features and Capabilities

You cannot update iPhoto to 9.6.1 before you install Yosemite 10.10.3.  It is not compatible with Mavericks.  After you do install Yosemite then you can follow the link you noted to get the latest iPhoto app..

Thanks for the info.  I was aware of the new iPhoto version as well as numbers and pages requiring the YO update.  My concern I believe has been misinterpreted by the reviewers so far.  In ny M-Lion I could endlessly download photos into my download folder insteaed of using iPhoto.  All I had to do was use the scroll bar on the download file and everything would show up.  Wjen Mav was loaded the new download folder is restricted to only 42 window slots with no scroll bar available, therefore, as downloads take place I now experience first in--first out on the valuable 42 slots.  That is where I lost most of my previous photos being kicked onto the hard drive and not into iPhoto.  Now I have to meticulously search for an identification of a jpg number load it to see what it is until I find what I am looking for.  I don't know if this was a glitch in the download or whether the Mav download file was actually designed to only hold 42 items.  Do you know the answer to that question?  I now have a backup disc for Timepiece as a result of that episode.  I am not a true techie and don't do a lot of experimentation with different programs and apps.  I just don't want the hassle of maybe having to clear my hard drive and  reset up everything if I know people have had a lot of problems with Yo.  It does seem a little strange that Apple already is planning to make El Capitan available in the fall right on the heels of having put out Yosemite, isn't it?  Anyway, I look forward to any comments you might have relative to my explanation here.  Thanks.

Is the Download folder set for the icon view.  If so change it to the list view and see if you can see all of the downloads.

Your explanation doesn't really make much sense & I have not seen the same issue on 10.9.

What do you mean by 'downloads of photos'. Are you talking about getting photos from an external device like a camera or iPhone?

iOS changed how it arranges photos a few versions back, so that may be one possible reason for what you are seeing. If you updated iOS & Mac OS at a similar time you could easily confuse the two changes.

If you want to download images from an external device without using iPhoto use 'Image Capture' in the Applications folder. It will allow you to save images into a folder etc.

If you are referring to some web downloads you will need to explain a little more.

Apple started this yearly upgrade cycle for OS X a few years ago. If you don't want to face the regular changes you don't have to upgrade. For some people it is simply better to stick with what they know, it is easier if you don't rely on iCloud & other online services that require the 'latest & greatest OS'.
