Q: How to keep email unread when selected?

Hello, in Mail application, when I select an email, it automatically turns to read, even if I don't open it.

Very disturbing as you need to reset mails to unread all the time.

Is there a way to change that?

Thanks

This is an EXCELLENT solution!  Exactly what I (and the OP) was looking for, and for free. Thanks so much!

I see no way of hiding the preview pane

As I said in my very first response on this thread, drag the divider between message list and preview pane all the way to the right of the window to hide the preview pane. This will stop emails being marked read until you double-click on them to read them.

Christianserving's TruePreview does not work with Mavericks, but I can confirm it works great pre-Mavericks.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Mailmate has the exact feature you're looking for.  I switched to mailmate post-gmail/Mavericks issue, but found the feature to not mark messages as read when viewing in the preview pane an pleasant surprise.  Now I'm getting fed up with Mailmate, however, for stupid neglegencies like being able to create mail rules for auto-forwarding.  I just can't win.

Yeah.... I have an aversion to seeing the Buy Now button when it is $50 for something that used to work for free. Pity.

I just tried the suggestion to pull the pane to the right but it only goes so far and stops.

I wanted to solve this as when I get spam I need to mark it as Junk but not have it also marked as read. I'm on a macbook pro with mavericks. It worked for me just as I wanted. If it helps here is how I got it to work.

Go to Mail in the top toolbar and choose preferences, then choose the View tab. In that tab/window tick 'Use classic layout"

You can leave this window open if you want,

Go back to Mail and the view should have changed to Mailboxes in the left column, and messages with two windows on the right, Don't select any message, it will immediately change to 'message read'.

Place the cursor on the divide between the message list (top) and the view box (bottom) and drag it down until its gone.

Now when you click on a message it does not get marked as read.

For me this is great as I can now mark all the spam messages as junk in one go without them being marked as read.

Now all I need is 'don't send a read receipt' like Outlook

Just keep dragging. It pauses for a moment.

I filed a bug report about this in 2006. Apple can't be using Mail, otherwise this problem wouldn't exist. I suspect (based on good evidence) that they use Outlook. I have decided that Apple has no intention of fixing this problem, if they are even aware of it. There is a non-free solution called Mailhub that has additional features.

Obviously, when they assassinated Pages, they weren't using Pages in their business, because they didn't suffer the massive disruptions the rest of us did. I suspect (based on good evidence) that they use Word. Check Netcraft. Apple doesn't use OS X Server to host its web site. It uses Linux. That would explain why they are dumbing it down.

I conclude that Apple is a hardware company, and for them, software is just a way of selling hardware. Since their own software isn't good enough for them, it probably isn't good enough for us. Using Apple's professional-level software is dangerous, because they might assassinate it and replace it with children's software at any time. They have already done that three times. Even the UI is in decay. If a problem affects you in Apple software, you can either ignore it or buy other software, depending on the severity of the issue. I waited eight years for a fix to Mail and finally bailed out. Fortunately, IMAP mail is in a universal format and stays on the server, so there's little damage.

The one part of the Enterprise market that Apple hasn't cracked is Apple. Take heed.

Matt Clifton is certainly telling us what is.  fmontrelay is simply saying the way it is, is an easy thing that apple should fix.  that feature exists in so many other mail clients.  Hard to imagine apple won't change this.

we all want to see the mail.  we don't want to just see the preview.  often, we don't want it to be read, so we have to mark it as unread.  that's dumb

Thank you...fully agree.  Selecting a box in outlook to not marked mail as read unless double-clicked and/or opened is preferred.  Incredible pain to not have this option as emails are consistently marked as read for me just by deleting an email and the selection moves down to the next message.

I wish Apple would have an option like in Outlook where you can set a time duration before the email turns to the read state.  I know someone is going to say why don't I use Outlook, well I would if my contacts would sync across all my devices, iPhone and iPad. This is a whole separate issue!!!
