Q: Many black thumbnails iPhoto '11.  What to do ?

iMac Intel Core Duo  2.4 GHz with 4 GB RAM and OS 10.68.  iPhoto has about 5% black thumbnails, most of which , but not all, disclose a picture upon clicking.  Other than backing up the iPhoto Library and following this Apple tech note:  iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library - Apple Support   is there anything to do ?

Would you agree that Options 1, 2, & 6 should be checked ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    QUESTIONS:

    • 1.  How to get this repaired Library extracted to the internal drive of the other computer ?  Does one transfer the old AND repaired Library, or just transfer the repaired Library ?

    • 2. How to prove success ?

    • 3. The original Library listed 32,273 photos.in iPhoto.  Now there are 41,960 photos.  Is this success or duplications ?  If duplicated, what is the best way to remove duplicates ?

    TIA

    • 1.  How to get this repaired Library extracted to the internal drive of the other computer ?  Does one transfer the old AND repaired Library, or just transfer the repaired Library ?

    Drag and drop? No, the rebuilt library is quite independent.

    • 2. How to prove success ?

    Look. It's the only way to be sure. But the log looks good.

    • 3. The original Library listed 32,273 photos.in iPhoto.  Now there are 41,960 photos.  Is this success or duplications ?  If duplicated, what is the best way to remove duplicates ?

    It could be either. For instance, it might have recovered items you tried to delete but which the other library failed to erase, or there is a chance there might be dupes.

    Some apps for dealing with duplicates in iPhoto

    iPhoto Library Manager

    Duplicate Annihilator

    Decliner

    iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner

    Yikes!   Many pictures, but the event list on the left side is gone.  No listings at all…. just pictures.  Why did this happen ?  How to get folders and events back ?

    Are you in full screen mode? If so, tap the esc key on your mac to come out of it.

    If you're not in full screen mode:

    Move our cursor slowly to the extreme left of the iPhoto window until it becomes a +, then click and drag right.

    Dr. Devlin:

    You indicated:  "Move our cursor slowly to the extreme left of the iPhoto window until it becomes a +, then click and drag right."

    Please explain further.  How will this restore all prior events and folders on the vertical left column ?  Please explain in more detail how to do this click and drag.

    Do you mean the folders are there but it's just that the window needs opening ?

    but the event list on the left side is gone

    The Dr. described how to open the sidebar in iPhoto.

    "Move our cursor slowly to the extreme left of the iPhoto window until it becomes a +, then click and drag right.

    When the cursor turns into this click and drag to the right to open the sidebar.

    Thank you, but the problem is that the sidebar IS OPEN and the 30 events are not listed.   There were there before the IPLM repair.

    How many events are shown in the window at the right?  Are the actual events missing or is it the number next to the Events title that is missing?  If it's the latter go to iPhoto's General preference pane and check the Show Items Count checkbox:

    Sorry, want to add this info about the repaired library.

    On the sidebar

    Pictures = 41,960

    Scavenged = 41,960

    Recovered = 0

    Does this explain anything ?   How often does iPhoto get corrupted ?  How often does it lose EVENTS folders when repairing with IPLM ?  Any way to fix this ?

    What happens when you check that check box?  What does the sidebar look like then?

    Also how many events are shown in the window to the right when you click on the Event icon in the sidebar?

    As you'll see 1,278 events!  What happened to the thirty folders in the sidebar ?

    You're referrring to albums, right?  I don't know.  iPLM usually preserves the albums but not projects.  If you're referring to projects, i.e. books, slideshows, cards, etc. then that's to be expected with an iPLM rebuild.

    To clarify what is missing:

    -- Albums

    -- Projects

    -- Slideshows

    and

    -- Horizontal dividers in picture field area

    and

    -- Missing pictures from 12/31/97 to 8/1/99 and missing pictures from 12/27/11 to 7/14/13  (the original library had pix from 12/31/97 to 7/14/13)

    Thank you so much, Old Toad, for your advice.

    Old Toad posted:  "You're referrring to albums, right?  I don't know.  iPLM usually preserves the albums but not projects.  If you're referring to projects, i.e. books, slideshows, cards, etc. then that's to be expected with an iPLM rebuild."

    So Apple's five step iPhoto repair sequence didn't help at all, and IPLM rebuilt increased the number of pictures, but eliminated albums, projects, and slideshows.

    Is there any other program or technique which can do better than IPLM ?   Should one just be happy that many more pictures have been revealed and their dates preserved ?
